wait till after shower to buy

I've been lurking on ebay looking at ring slings and cloth diapers lately. A couple times I've seen REALLY good deals that I let pass up because it's on my registry. I think I've just got nesting hormones going on now that I'm feeling like I need to start preparing for baby ASAP even though I just got into second tri.

I don't want to expect people to get my stuff. Yet at the same time if I have that "I'm not expecting anything" mentality I would prefer to start buying now that way it's spread out and less of a financial strain.

Social taboo. Bleh.

Take the money you would use to buy now and put it aside so that if you DO end up needing to spend all that money at once, you'll have it already and it won't really be a strain.

This is great advice!

I would just buy the really good deals when you see them. I don't think my CD friends got lots of CD at their showers and if you want to build a stash do it!

Or, save the money as was suggested above.

If you see a really good deal I would buy now, and either take it off your list and replace with something else or you can just leave it on the list and have extra or if someone does buy you can always return and exchange. I say buy because you never know people may not buy everything on your list.

When I saw amazing deals, I bought the item and deleted it from my registry.

If you really want something and it's a good deal I would just buy it. I would rather have it and have to return or exchange than wait for someone to buy it and then have to buy it myself if they don't. (and then hae to pay full price)

I plan on buying everything I really want well before my shower.

This. CD's aren't a really "popular" item for baby shower purchases. Also, I saw you were looking at ring slings. Buy the sling and register for a different kind (like K'tan or Peanut Shell, etc) or brand. I had to go through several types before I found something both baby and I were happy with.

This is true. I feel bad registering for something like a moby wrap on amazon though when I can get a used one for 1/3 the price! I wish ebay or craigslist had registry options lol.

Hmm... good point on the CD. I know it's common for people to bring a pack of disposable diapers, so I guess I just ass-umed that a single CD would kind of be the same thing.

I am CDing and I put a ton of CD stuff on our registry, hoping to get them at the shower. I too passed up quite a few good deals on eBay, Amazon, etc. We had our shower this past Saturday and were *SO* blessed with a ton of amazing things, but we got exactly 1 CD! Now I am wishing I had made some of the purchases I passed on before. Either start putting away money now to buy stuff after the shower, or buy it now.

I agree with this!

Most people don't have their hearts set on buying you any particular item so it's no skin off their nose if your registry changes.  (Heck, I go to the store, print it out, buy something in my price range, & leave.)  So if you see an amazing deal, get it, and people will get you something else.

I ended up doing something similar when DH & I found a good deal on a bassinet for DD#1 a month before my shower at a different store than where we'd registered, plus a coupon for it at that store.  We knew it was a bigger item, too, so we figured we're better of getting it at a great price would be smart, rather than having someone who was so inclined to buy a bigger present for us spend more than they had to for it.

I have been buying all my CDs for the last 3-4 months... they go on sale - I buy them... it is unusual for my family to order things online and I think it would be too much of a hastle for them to have to order CDs... only a few stores in the area carry them and they are WAY more expensive... I just took the initiative to get that done...

Buy gift cards that you can use if you aren't good at setting money aside and keeping it aside - then you can use those instead of breaking into the savings account...

I'm waiting until after my first shower to buy anything. Thankfully, it's tomorrow, so ill know more soon.

But I'm waiting until I get the registry completion discounts to buy cloth diapers. I've heard mixed reports on getting them on eBay so I'm not risking that.

Ater tomorrow, I'll probably start stalking deals more though. Thankfully we got the big things (crib, pack n play, high chair and stroller/car seat) for Christmas from out parents, so it's just little stuff left. That's why I figure I can wait to buy.

I had my last shower at 38 weeks. It made me very nervous, but I waited until afterward to buy what I needed and didn't get.

Buy it and take it off your registry.  If it gets time for your shower and your registry is slim pickings, people will still figure out things to get you or will give you gift cards.

When it comes to cloth diapers, I would start your stash now.   Most people wont buy cloth diapers.  I've heard from several family members that they think I'm wasting my money because "no one uses those anyway", so they definitely wont be popular shower gifts unless you have CD'ing friends or family.   And there are people who wont buy online items, and the big baby stores dont have the brands I wanted, anyway.

If I came across good deals on the pricier items, I would just buy them.  I put mostly lower cost items on my registry, anyway.
