My head is spinning! Any advice?

I got pregnant without trying right after I got off of the pill.  I lost the pregancy and we are trying again.  So all of this is very new to me.  I am charting with fertility friend (actually just started today).  I dont understand the basal temp thing.  I understand that when your basal temp goes up, that means you have ovulated, but you wouldnt know you have ovulated until after you took the higher temp.  So how can you time intercource a few days before ovulation? Does that make sense? By the time your temp spikes you have already ovulated, so its too late to time intercource a few days before ovulation.   My periods are all over the place so I cant really predict when I think "my fertile window" is.

Lastly, everyone abberviates everything, and I dont know what anything means.  I read that New to TTGP on the top of this forum, and it said there was a key to the bbreviations, but I cant find it.  Please help

Try using ovulation predictor kits as well as tracking CM and CP. The opk and cm/cp tracking will help you predict your most fertile days. Temp charting only helps confirm O has actually occured. This board has tons of information! Welcome.

Paying attention to cervical mucus (CM) and using Ovulation Prediction Kits (OPKs) can help you determine when you're in your Fertile Window (FW).  They also help with charting your Basal Body Temperature (BBT) and determining your Ovulation (O) date.  After charting a couple of cycles, you'll be able to notice changes and figure out when you're in your FW more easily.

Hope that helped! (HTH)

Here's the Bump Glossary.

You're right that temping doesn't predict ovulation, it just confirms it after the fact. That's why a lot of us also pay close attention to our CM (cervical mucus) and use ovulation predictor kits. The OPKs detect your LH surge that happens 12-36 hours or so before you ovulate. They give you a heads-up about your fertile window. Also, once you've used FF for a few cycles, it gets better at predicting your FW.

That said, figuring out your FW is still pretty much a guessing game. I tend to try to start having sex on CD 10 or 11 and go every other day or so until I've confirmed ovulation.

Thanks for replying so quickly!  Is their a difference between an ovulation predictor kit and an ovulation predictor test?  When you take a positive test that means that you are supposed to get busy?  How do you check your CP?

No, when we say OPKs, we're talking about the test strips. Most of us use Wonfos from amazon. When the test is positive, it means that you'll likely ovulate in the next day or two, so it's time to get busy.

Sorry for your loss. I am in a similar boat as you in terms of going off the pill, getting pregnant quickly, but losing the first pregnancy.  My cycles are also irregular, and typically longer. So, FF became my quick friend, so keep it up. The temping gets easier as well, and starts to become clear after a couple cycles. I started using OPK's too (Clear Blue Easy Digital - but they are expensive) and the first cycle we used them, we got a smiley face (with confirmed ovulation through BBT) we got pregnant - again.  But, was a chemical pregnancy (CP) and we lost it again. Boo. I start OPK'ing around CD 10 because I have longer cycles, but the instruction booklet with the OPK's has good info too.  Good luck!

I will let the other ladies continue to answer questions but honestly, I don't check CP. I have short stubby fingers and can't seem to feel that far up. So don't worry about focusing on CP too much, but OPKs and CM alone worked well for me on my first cycle to predict my FW.

I'm still trying to figure out what my CP means (I'm on cycle 4 TTC) so I would recommend checking your CM and using OPKs. When you are close to ovulating, your CP will be high (can sometimes be unreachable to your finger, but not always), soft (I've heard it compared to what your lower lip feels like) and open. When you are not close to ovulating (after AF or in your lutueal phase), it will be low, firm and closed. Whether my cervix is high or low is the only indication I can differentiate, though.

I personally never check Cervical Position.  I have felt it, and I know if I don't feel like it's getting punched during sex, then it's probably high, but I don't record it.  For me, checking CM, temping, and OPKs are enough to determine O.

If it's something that you want to figure out, you can read up on it in FF.  There's also a very graphic website called mybeautifulcervix.com  A girl posted pictures of her cervix every day for an entire cycle.
