Choloris plexus cyst found 20wk ultrasound

Hi everyone.  I had my 20 week ultrasound last week.  My doctor called the other day and said they found a choloris plexus cyst in the brain and that I have to go for level two ultrasound.  He said not to worry but ofcourse I'm freaking out.  The cyst could either disappear or it could mean my baby boy has trisomy 18 / downsyndrome.  All my blood work and other tests up to this point have been fine and the baby looked good at ultrasound so I'm trying not to panic.  I go tomorrow for the level two ultrasound and then will know more.  Has anyone else had this happen??

wow. this is literally the 4th or 5th post yet this week about this same thing. i hope that gives you some comfort about just how common finding these are becoming. i don't have any experience with them, but the general consensus seems to be that doctors are able to find them more due to the high quality of the u/s machines these days. good luck to you guys, and try to relax. i'm sure it will resolve itself.

I had my A/S this week and they found calcification on one of my baby girl's hearts. I know it's not the same thing but it too is a "soft marker" for Down syndrome.

The first words out of my Doctor's mouth where not to worry to the point that she didn't even see the need to do a Quad screen blood work. I also spoke with a girlfriend who is an ultrasound tech and she said that with one soft marker to not worry at all. She said if there were 4 or 5 soft markers then she may be concerned but even then it may be nothing.

I'm sure it will all resolve itself in time.

I was going to say the same thing. Between this board and my BMB, I have seen a ton of these posts lately.

My DS1 also had a choroid plexus cyst on his brain at my A/S. Every OB handles it differently, my tech actually pointed it out but also stated that he had zero other markers and the fact that he was opening his hands ruled out anything being wrong. OB said he was going to be perfectly fine. These cysts are very common and without any other markers sometimes OBs won't even mention it to you, some mention it but don't require further action, and some do some more testing just in case, but really, your LO is going to be fine. I know it's hard not to worry.

They found the same thing at my AS at 18w with DD.  I went back at 20w and they were still there but smaller and she had no other markers so they told me she was fine.  My OB wasn't worried at all--3 out of his 4 kids had them and they are perfectly healthy.

This is what the genetic counselor told me: Back in the 80s I think it was, when they completed autopsies on a fetus or NB that died, many of the babies had trisomy 18 and also had these cysts.  Come to find out in later years, these cysts were very common in a lot of babies--trisomy or not.  And even in adults that died--the same cysts were being found in them as well.  So it more than likely is absolutely nothing to worry about unless there are other markers for T18--which they would have seen by now.

I don't post here that often but I felt the need to reply. They found 3 cysts on my DD's brain at my 20 week scan. I also had low amniotic fluid. Because of these 2 things I was sent to high risk OB for the remainder of my pregnancy. Turned out the cysts began to shrink and all but 1 were gone by the time I was 36 weeks. She is a perfectly healthy four year old girl now. Good luck! I'll keep your lo in my thoughts prayers

Check out the April 2013 board- a girl posted on there recently (maybe today?) about their follow up exam- the cysts had completely disappeared!

Please try not to worry! This happened with my first son at the 20 week scan, and I was on pins and needles for two weeks waiting on genetic screening bloodwork. It came back fine...and he is now a perfectly healthy, smart 23 month old! I remember how hysterical I was... but like someone else posted, the only reason they even show up is b/c u/s technology has gotten so good. My u/s tech was surprised teh high risk OB made such a huge deal about it .At your follow-up scan, they will look for "promising" signs, such as your baby opening and closing his or her hands, movement, etc. Prayers for yall!

I feel for you!  Our DS is 2 1/2.  At our 20 week ultrasound we had a choroid plexus cyst AND a intra-cardiac focus (bright spot on the heart).  We too were sent to a a Level II ultrasound and genetic counseling.  The counselor said these two are rarely seen together.  We were sent to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester where they have the best specialists in the world.  One week later both were gone!  The specialist said they see a lot more of these than they have in the past and they credit the increase in the strength of technology for being able to see more things that have always been there.  My OB this time around told me her daughter have almost 20!! And that she was fine!  Feel free to PM me but I am SURE you are going to be just fine!

My first baby had this and honestly, its no big deal.  I dont really udnerstand the part where you say "of course I have to get a level 2 US".  A repeat U/s was never offered to me and my mw told me they usually go away on their own before birth.

I had another u/s when I was overdue and it was gone by that point.  Stop worrying.  Everything will be fine. If you google "ISOLATED choroid plexus cyst" which is what you have, you will see thats NBD
