Looking for not so sweet icing recipe

Hi I am considering making a minnie mouse cake for my daughters 1st birthday but am very inexperienced. Just wondering about icing. I dont like sweet icing, I am more of a dream whip girl myself but obviously I can decorate with dream whip. Any ideas ona  good tasting frosting that is also good for decorating?

Thanks.

I really like buttercream. Apparently meringue buttercream is less sweet than your standard variety. It takes a bit more effort to make, but people rave about it. Maybe try gooogling it and see what you can find on it.

I made my DD's birthday cake with 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup fruit puree in place of 1 cup of sugar that the recipe called for. You could probably use a fruit puree and lower sugar on a frosting recipe too. I made regular cream cheese icing because I was afraid it wouldnt stand up and didn't have time to test it out.

Just looking for that today...many recipes out there...just google baby's 1st birthday cake, healthy icing, etc.

This one interested me because it is nicely adaptable depending on what types of decorating you plan to do...sorry, I don't have the url...something like ourhavenhill??

 Birthday Cupcake Buttercream Frosting

Ingredients:

1 package (16 oz) powdered sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
3 tablespoons milk
2 teaspoons vanilla
Directions:

Beat butter, sugar, milk, and vanilla with an electric mixer on low
speed until smooth and well blended.
If  it’s too thick, beat in additional milk by the teaspoonful until
the frosting is of spreading consistency.
Makes about 2 1/2 cups frosting.

Homemade frosting recipe:

mix 1 cup shortening with 1 tablespoon vanilla, and 1 tsp imitation almond

mix together till blended

mix in 2 tablespoons water

mix in 4 cups confectioners sugar (mix in 1 cup at a time, mixing between each cup with an electric mixer).

Add 1 tsp of water at a time until desired consistency, don't add a lot of water at once, will get very thin very fast.  Heat and humidity in mind, make it firmer if its warmer.

Put into bag and pipe or use a spatula to frost.

Since no butter or milk, this doesn't need to be refrigerated and lasts a while! I make about 400 cupcakes a month with this recipe, and I'm told it's well liked.  Add your coloring last.  If you want true red or black frosting, you put your color in, mix it in, and leave it overnight out of the sun, the color will deepen with time.

Good luck!
