Induction vs C-Section -- which should I choose?

They will likely be doing one or the other at 38 weeks due to hypertension.  I'm guessing an induction is a much better option -- but does it always work? I'd hate to start that just to end up needing a C instead.  Should I just elect C? Thoughts please...

I would choose induction over c-section any day of the week. Granted, you are at a higher risk of a c-section with an induction, but even still, I'd rather go for the less invasive option(s) right out of the gate instead of jumping into consenting for major surgery before trying the other.

And not all inductions lead to c-section. Myself, along with several friends and I can only imagine many people on TB that are 2+ time moms have had successful vaginal deliveries after being induced.

It's important to do your own research and make the best decision that you can for you and your family. Good luck.

Despite horror stories that seem prevalent on boards such as these, the majority of inductions actually result in a successful vaginal birth. Yes, inducing increases your chances of a c-section, but it's far from a guarantee.

I believe the chances of c-section are only 20-25%, which means the odds are in your favor.

Your chances will be higher for c-section if you're totally closed and have no dilation/effacement, but they're still in your favor at that point.

Most doctors won't let you just "elect" a csection. I was 41 weeks with no dilation, thinning or anything. I asked for a c section because I was afraid of a failed induction. My doctor said the risks are too high to just opt for a c section. I had a failed induction with an emergency c section. It was a most horrid experience, but I still had a super easy recovery.

I have mixed feelings about this because if a baby isnt making the progress your OB wants to see then youll end up doing both. I would see how you progress by 38 weeks and if you can make a decision as late as possible then do that. Go talk to the CS board there are tons of helpful ladies there. :)

Induction. Chance of c-section vs. 100% guarantee of CS? I'd pretty much always go with the option of potentially not having surgery.

Yep.

Also, the chances of an induction working have a lot to do with what your body is doing at the time.  This is called a Bishop's Score.

If I were you I would do research on both inductions and C/S so that you better understand the risks of each.

I was induced at 38 weeks with twins, and delivered both vaginally. Even though D (babe #2) was stuck and led to my boys being 27 minutes apart. I had to deliver in the OR, just in case they needed to do an emergency CS, but everything was fine. :) I say go with induction, because it could end without the need for cutting.

This. While induction does carry some risk of getting a c-section, I would still opt for that over a voluntary c-section.

Although, I would talk to your OB about this. My OB does not want me to have a c-section unless it is absolutely necessary.

I induced both my previous kids and had wonderful vaginal deliveries. Im not sure why there are always so many negative stories on forums saying if you induce, you will end up with a C-section anyways. I have lots of friends who also induced, who had amazing vaginal births.

Yes, there is always a chance of a C-section, but thats true even if you go into labor naturally. They dont talk C-section unless you arent dilating very well after a long period of time or something big happens, like the baby's heartrate drops. You cant predict that, induction or not. I say go with induction :)

You have a 50% chance of having a c-section if you are induced without going into spontaneous labor on your own. You have 100% chance of a c-section if you schedule a c-section.

I would want to attempt vaginal delivery because it is significantly less risky to deliver vaginally than by surgery. However, induced labors are more intense, scary, tramatizing, etc. for a lot of women than is a normal spontaneous labor leading to vaginal delivery. (That is how it has been described to me by other mothers.) But there is still a chance that everything can go smoothly, or have just a hiccup or two and you have a great birth experience.

I wish you the best of luck with your decision, either way you will get to meet your baby at the end of it all. And that is what matters most.
