any happiest baby on the block mamas?

ive read HBOTB and watched the dvd, and the dvd was awesome! it was great to visualize exactly how to do the "5 S's". my only issue is that im intimidated by the "swinging"!

the jiggly head scares me and im scared im going to hurt my baby! i watched how great it worked on the dvd and everything logically makes sense but i cant snap out of it! any words of encouragement? anyone else have these same anxieties and everything turned out ok? thanks for any input ladies!

Yes, you're not actually jiggling the baby's head, you're just swinging their whole body so their head is not really moving on its own.

Our little guy loved the shhhhh and the swaying.

She loves swinging and shhhhhh. It's the only thing that calms her down.

Actually, in the DVD he does jiggle their head. OP, it took me a bit of practice to get used to it. I use the same position he does in the DVD, with my knees together and LO on his side with his head laying on my palms. I barely move my legs, it doesn't take much to get his head going. Be gentle and you should be fine!

ETA: I love HBOTB so hard. The 5 S's work every. single. time.

The swing is worth its weight in gold.  Or platinum.  DS slept exclusively in that thing for probably 3 months.  It was the single lynchpin in my sanity.

I also read and loved HBOTB.

We used this with DS and it worked really well. I kind of forgot about it but we find ourselved naturally doing the S's with DD too. Don't worry about the head. It's more of a whole body movement so the baby's head is not jiggling, at least not much.

Dr. Karp literally calls it the jello head jiggle...not sure why everyone is saying there's no jiggling of the head.

Yeah, I guess I'm thinking it's not a drastic shake to where the baby could get injured.

Very true. Let's not shake the baby.

I didn't notice you were still pregnant. Once your baby is here and you can't get he/she to stop screaming, you'll probably be a bit more brave.

Also, you won't give your baby shaken baby syndrome!  :)

ahh, thank you! this is pretty much what i was thinking but my brain works in weird ways in this home strech of pregnancy. it didnt help that even though im convinced that dr karp is a GENIUS, he does seem just a little odd in the dvd :]

gotta give him credit though, he's got me so convinced it all works i plan on busting those S's out before we even leave the hospital

meh, you may not need too. I was all gung-ho on HBOTB, but then I gave birth to a pretty chill kid. We occasionally do the 5's (mostly just swaddle, suck and swing/sway, occasionally a little shushing) and he calms right away. Interesting read though.

You got to really jolt a baby to give it shaken baby. Like really. Their head basically has to snap forward and back pretty forcefully in order for the brain to be shaken hard enough to hit the skull. Jello head jiggling will not do it :)
