Tdap

Hi,

My OB recommended I get the Tdap and flu shot and didn't say that I should wait until after 20 weeks which is what I read on the paperwork AFTER getting the shot. I'm 13 weeks 1 day pregnant and freaking out about it now! Help! Did anyone else get this vaccine before 20 weeks?!

Thanks!

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say you should be fine.

Yeah, I didn't know about the tdap, but I got the flu shot when I was like 5 or 6 weeks. They're fine!

No, the chart says 'recommended', but if you read further into the in depth descriptions, her OB wasn't following CDC guidelines.

From the link above:

"Pregnant women who have not been previously vaccinated with Tdap should get one dose of Tdap during the third trimester or late second trimester (after 20 weeks gestation). If not administered during pregnancy, Tdap should be administered immediately postpartum. 12

  • On October 24, 2012, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices voted to recommend Tdap during each pregnancy, preferably at 27 through 36 weeks gestation. "

OP, you should be fine, but I would definitely bring the issue up with your OB at your next visit, to get a read for just how different their medical opinions are from the norm, in general.

I'm sure you'll be fine, waiting may have been better but what's done is done.  trust your OB!

And...

According to my friend who is due any day - new york state has made TDaP mandatory for new parents before leaving the hospital and their daycare providers because of a whooping cough outbreak.  Making my needle shy husband get the vaccination, this should be interesting!

Cormilo, it probably won't cause you any issues. I've had all of my shots (even Hep B - *before* I found out that my personal chances for contracting Hep B was *very small* and even if I did, it would most likely not turn chronic - I literally risked more by taking the vaccine!!). It was an important object lesson to me, as when I was a teenager I was still very naive. It was voluntary at the time and my parents just let me make the decision for myself. Anyways, yes, I've had my shots, and so far, I'm fine, so you probably will be, too.

In the future, though, I would suggest that the next time anyone - even your doctor - suggests that your body gets injected by alien elements (such as a vaccine shot), you research it *for yourself* before accepting. Don't follow along with the crowd. Just tell your doctor to give you a week to think about it, and then ask the doctor for information (not judgments - just *information*). Use that week to do a lot of reading. Look up the VAERS, and the statistics and information for risks vs. benefits, and get a list of the ingredients in the vaccine and learn about *them*. Also, read about the diseases and find out the true numbers (historically and present day) to adverse events and complications with them, Go to good sources. Don't believe everything just because the CDC tells you to (although *yes* do look up what CDC says!). Get it *verified* by multiple sources. Also, if  you can, you can try and read the studies for yourself, keeping in mind who is *funding* those studies. Then, use your own judgment.

I got my flu shot before I was 20 weeks.  My OB and my pulmonologist both suggested I get it as soon as possible.

Yes, it's recommended that you wait until 20 weeks, but if it were a real issue, it would have been contraindicated for early pregnancy...

You'll be ok, the CDC says the "prefered time period" is to vaccinate for TDAP after 27 weeks, but you can safely have it sooner. The reason they recommend that time period is because it may be a better to maximize mom and baby's antibody response:

"To maximize the maternal antibody response and passive antibody transfer to the infant, optimal timing for Tdap administration is between 27 and 36 weeks gestation."

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/recs/provisional/downloads/Tdap-pregnant-Oct-2012.pdf

But it won't hurt the baby to have it sooner, and you should still have a good antibody response.

As far as flu goes, it's safe in any trimester.

I had the TDAP pre-pregnancy, but got the flu shot at about 12 weeks, and everything was fine. :)

Thank you all for the responses. I recently talked to a nurse who assured me it was safe to get both shots at any time especially if there have been outbreaks in your area. I am a teacher surrounded by kids and have had 2 teachers get pertussis so far this school year. I actually feel better that I got the shots right away!

Personally, I'm skipping the flu shot. I got the TDAP before I was trying for a baby as a precaution (which I read about on this site actually). My family doctor said it's best to not have the TDAP while pregnant (either before or immediately after).
