How does your LO wake up?

I have a 4 week old baby.  He sleeps fairly well, usually 1 1/2-2 hrs block but when he wakes up it's generally with a startling cry/crying.  Is this normal?  Of course, I pick him up and either feed/change diaper and he's good again.  If your baby is around this age, is this how they wake up too?  Thank you for any insight.

Mine most definitely cried.

I'm still pleasantly surprised now when I see him wake up and him staring contentedly.

I have a 3 week old, and he generally fusses for a few minutes before starting to cry. Usually he's hungry and gets fed after he wakes up, so that's usually the cause. He generally doesn't cry when he needs a diaper change - just when he has gas and is trying to work it out. But yes, when he gets picked up, fed, and changed, he's usually good again.

Jax fusses for a minute or two before starting to cry. I don't grab him the second he fusses, so sometimes he ends up falling back asleep which is wonderful.

It took me many weeks to realize this:

If DS wakes up crying (only happens at naps), it means that he's waken up too early and is still tired.  So I usually let him cry a little (a few minutes) and most of the time he falls back asleep.  If he continues to cry, I pick him up and bounce him until he falls asleep again.

When DS gets enough sleep (eg, overnight sleep, or a long nap), he wakes up happy and content, and will smile when he sees me.
