Problem with First Ultrasound

Hey ladies!  I was waiting to introduce myself until after my first doctor's appointment, which was yesterday.  I found out I was pregnant on 12/30.  My hubby and I weren't technically trying to get KU, just not preventing.  Originally we were planning on starting to try around February, but we were both happily surprised by the news.

According to my LMP, my EDD is 9/5 and I should be about seven weeks.  I went in for my first ultrasound and they told me that I was only measuring about six weeks and they couldn't find a heartbeat.  They gave me a blood test to check my hcg levels, and I have to go back for another blood test tomorrow to see if they have risen.  I won't hear back from the doctor until Monday.  I'm trying not to worry about it too much, but I'm sure you can imagine how that's going.

Anyone have any similar experiences?  My doctor seemed to think chances are not good that this pregnancy will stick.  He told me to prepare for a miscarriage, but I can't help holding out a little hope.  Would appreciate any advice or similar stories!

Sorry to meet you all this way, but hopefully I will be able to stick around!

Congrats on your positive! I wouldn't be too concerned.

If you got a positive on 12/30 - that has been 18 days. The earliest someone usually sees a postive test is 8DPO. Then you have to add the 14 days before ovulation. Add that all up and it's possible that you could be as early as 5w 6d - so right around the time that your doctor dated you.

There are LOTS of women who don't hear a heartbeat until later on. 6 weeks is standard, but some may even be 8 weeks before the heart starts beating.

That being said- DON'T give up! :) Hope this helps ease any fears you may have.

You could have ovulated late and your dates could be off.  Going by LMP isnt always accurate.

Good luck and I hope everything works out for you.

It's possible you ovulated later than the "average" CD 14, which would put your EDD later.

I had the same thing happen last week.  I went to the doctor last Friday and there was only a gestational sac.  I should have been 6 weeks, 5 days but she said the gestational sac was measuring at 5 weeks, 5 days.  They took blood and all that but my doctor told me its pretty common for women to be a week behind based off their LMP and a lot of people O later than they thought.  I went back on Monday and there was a baby (to me it looked like a blob but i could see the heart fluttering) with a heartbeat measuring 6 weeks, 1 day and my EDD is 9/9/2012.  I'm surprised the doctor was negative.  Good luck and hope it works out!

I would say don't give up! :) You probably just ovulated late. I originally thought I was further along than what I am b/c of LMP

Same thing happen to me two weeks ago I measured at 6 weeks 0 days we could see the huge sac, the fetal pole, and a small tiny tad pole. I came back today we saw a heart beat 177 BPM and we saw the baby who is measuring at 8 weeks 5 days. Therefore, I think it is too early.

This is NOT wise. There is a very little time frame for the heart to start beating. It happens late in 5+ weeks into early 6+ weeks. If there is no heartbeat at 8 weeks, then the pregnancy is not viable, period.

If there is no cardiac activity by, let's say, 6.5 weeks, it is highly unlikely it'll start. An hour can be a huge difference at this stage. If you go in at 9 am at 6w1d, there may be no heartbeat. If you go back at noon, there might be. Saying that it might not start until 8 weeks, however, is just plain wrong information.
