How long do you plan to swaddle?

If you're swaddling, how long do you plan to do it for? I've read some places you should stop at 3 to 4 months, and other sources say you can do it as long as you like if it's just at night. My LO is only 10 days old so I have time to figure it out. :

You need to stop when they can roll over - then it's not safe in case then end up face down!  With DD1 that was around 4 - 5 months.

This is what I've heard too, you don't want them to manage flipping over while swaddled and having a hard time flipping back.

And the bad mom confession- The first time my first rolled while swaddled I laughed my butt off.  He was crying and trying to roll back over and was about the funniest sight ever.  I didn't leave him long, but I did consider getting the video camera.

I have been taking cues from LO. Some days he is really fidgety and can't sleep so I will swaddle him. Other days if I swaddle him he fusses and tries to break out. I've been waiting to see if he goes one way more than the other to make up my mind.

May 2010 - Started Withdrawal from all RA/fibro meds October 2010 - Finally able to start trying. Started metformin February 2011 - Referral to Fertility specialist - blood work normal March 2011 - Discovered blocked right tube, unknown obstruction - Started femara April, June, August, October, December 2011 - Failed IUI's Started IVF February 2012 Egg retrieval - March 2, 2012. Rolling or 6 months. None of my kids rolled before 6 months, so that wasn't a problem for us.

We swaddle DD2 (5.5months) at nap and bedtime. We don't ONLY do the night.

Good advice. My LO always gets his arm out, but he definitely sleeps better swaddled.

I can already see myself doing this. I find it oddly cute to watch him struggle to do stuff because he is so tiny and gets so furious!

With my 2 YO we did it until she could roll over pretty well, but working at a daycare I have seen parents request their children be swaddle up to...18 months. Ridiculous. Can you say "helicopter mom" much? We mainly stopped at the rolling stage because while she rolled, she usually wiggled her arms out so the swaddle became useless anyways :)

When they roll over. If lo rolls over and cannot use their arms they can smother.

That does sound funny :) My bad mom confession is when she is crying sometimes she makes this extremely sad face with her bottom lip sticking out. It is SO cute and DH and I just laugh because it's so adorable.

OP, I'm planning on stopping around 3 months.

As others have said, until they can rollover you can do it, it's only then it becomes an issues.

My LO is strong and I know rolling over will be coming in the next couple months, so I just started trying to ease toward breaking her of it. I just started swaddling her with one arm out for 1 nap a day. I will move onto more naps, then two arms out, ect as a way to ease her out of it. I would rather ease out of it, then stop it cold turkey and have a couple hellish days of no sleep, as my LO absolutely loves it, and loves to be tightly wrapped.

Swaddled my first two babies for five months, and I assume it will be the same with my third.  As PP have said... Once they can roll over it is best to transition to a sleep sac (arms out).
