Newborn fighting sleep: anyone else?

What gives? He's clearly sleepy, he can barely keep his eyes open but he keeps fighting it.  Or if he does sleep, he keeps waking up.  My first was the same way.  Am I just cursed with crappy sleepers or is this normal?  What do you guys do to help them along? Rocking, paci, singling, the 5 Ss, I've tried it all.

He's 6.5 weeks by the way.

Yep, me too! See above post! I have no answers though, that's why I posted. I hope it gets better for us both soon, let me know if you figure it out!

Yes, I think for us it's because she's overtired. It's a vicious cycle because when they get too tired they don't sleep which only worsens their tiredness. We're holding/rocking/bouncing her in our arms for about 10 minutes past when she falls asleep then moving her to her swing. She seems to be sleeping better today with this approach but we'll see how it works long term.

If it's a new thing for your LO it might just be because of a growth spurt, I've heard there is one sometime between 6 & 8 weeks which might affect his sleep.

My FB was great with sleep, but my 3 week old is a terror. The only the that I have found helpful is keeping a strong eye for cues from her that she might be getting sleepy. I have found that a tight swaddle and snuggle with me in our rocking chair is the only way I can get her into a deep enough sleep to lay her down. As soon as I see an eye rub or a yawn I get her ready, and it takes a LONG time but eventually it works. Hope yours gets out of it!

Haha I know it sounds silly but I do the same thing and it puts DS right to sleep. I dont know what it is about the soothing sounds of a vacuum but its the only thing that works for me when hes fighting his sleep.

DS was like this between 4w to 8w.  he fought sleep (esp naps) every single day.  I cried with him every day.  And then around 8.5w, he just grew out of it.  He still fights a little, but he no longer cries when he fights (he just fusses a bit and rubs his eyes), and he falls asleep much faster (5-10 mins instead of 2 hrs).  All I can say is, hang in there... it'll get better!
