WDYT Zara

DH and I can't agree on names! But we both like Zara. Do you think this name is way "out there" or is it normal enough that our daughter wont have to spend her whole life correcting people? Would you pronounce it Sara with a Z, or Zahra. Should it be spelled Zahra if we want it pronounced that way? Thanks for your input :)

I would pronounce it ZAHR-uh, like the world famous high end designer / clothing store.

It is okay, but the store immediately comes to mind.

I predict she will constantly have to correct people--"It's Zara.. with a Z, not Sara."

Don't like that.

I would say Zah-rah.  Please spell it the traditional way.

Not a name I would personally use.  I'm a Lois and Clark fan, and that was the name of Clark's Kryptonian birth-wife in a 4-episode arc.  (Love the episodes and the character but the name is forever associated that way.)

ehh, either one you choose there will always be a correcting issue, either spelling wise or pronunciation wise, so whichever you like best...its NMS.

I like it!

I'd keep Zara and not worry about mispronunciations. I think some people will be familiar with it — it's ranked in the 600s and rising, so it's not totally unheard of.

I love Zara. I would pronounce it ZAH-ruh.

One of my college professors name is Zara so that gives me a good association with the name.

I like it. I think first of Zara Phillips (the Queen's granddaughter) and then the clothing chain. Neither are bad associations.

This, when I see it spelled Zara.

However, when you throw the H in there, I like it a lot better and no longer think of the store.  My pronunciation of it does change ever so slightly though, I "hear" the added h like a 7 in Arabic/aspirated h.

This is a really popular name in England and the correct pronunciation is Zah-ruh. Please spell it the right way and stick with Zara, though!!! It's a great name!

I would pronounce it the same. I think it is pretty.

I wouldn't say Zara the store is high end designer, it's comparable to H&M and TOPSHOP. European, but affordable.

When I read it, I read it as Zah-ra not like Sara with a Z. IMO if you want it to sound like Zah-ra I'd spell it Zahra.

Zahra is on my list! I love it, and prefer this pronunciation to the rhymes-with-Sara version. My partner's surname begins with a Z, so we like Z names, and it's hard to find ones that don't sound like they belong in a sci-fi novel. We also like Zadie, although if you're Jewish or live in an area with a large Jewish population that name might not work, as it's very similar to the Yiddish word for grandpa. (We named the dog Zadie, figuring she wouldn't mind it if someone thought we were calling her grandpa.)
