3 weeks before the shower is appropriate for a baby shower.

I agree with this.  If you have family or friends who live quite a distance or usually work week-ends you might want to give them a head's up in advance of the shower invites going out so they can make arrangements.

I am so glad you asked this question. my mom wanted to send out my sister's invitations 6 weeks in advance, I told her it was a shower, not a wedding.

I think you have to take the venue into account. I know that the restaurant where my shower was held needed a head count 2 weeks before the shower. Obviously, the invitations could not be sent out only 3 weeks in advance. Also, and perhaps it's a NYC thing, I have never received a shower invitation less than 6 weeks before the date of the event.

At least 4 weeks in advance. I am being generous and giving time for delivery for any out of town guest. Guests should have at least 3 weeks notice though.

My mom and I just discussed, since lots of our family/friends are coming from out of town.  Were planning on 6-8 wks, it is a lot of notice but it will help everyone figure out travel etc.  My shower will be after the birth though.
