I hate flying...and am worried I'm going to F this up :/

This is kind of a random question, and probably just me and my unnecessary paranoia, but I'm sure some of you ladies can relate, as we've come this far, we don't want to screw anything up!

Anyways...our IVF #1 is next month. ER the week of 2/11, so ET likely sometime 2/15-2/18. That puts me at finding out if we have a BFP around the week of 2/25. I am scheduled to travel (via airplane) on 3/6 for a conference. I'm stressing out that I will be traveling so soon after finding out if we are BFP or not. If we are (FX), it's okay to fly on a plane right? I mean, people do it every day that are 5-6ish weeks prego (and have no idea they're prego!) Will I need to take precautions with the body scanners?

I guess my main concern is that I get pretty anxious flying...hate it...would rather claw my eyes out. So...I'm worried that my anxiety is going to stress my body out and affect the pregnancy. Furthermore, I'm speaking at the conference, which I don't usually stress out about, but ya know...there's always a little nervousness with speaking in front of large groups. So...I think I am just stressing out about stressing out, but...needed some advice. Hoping to just stay calm and do some relaxation exercises before the trip. Is something like Xanax or Valium okay to take prego? Should I look into that, or just suck it up and face my fears? I have gotten better about my anxiety with flying, but...still get pretty nervous esp during take off and landing. I just don't want to F this up...

Part of me wonders if I should have not committed to speaking at this conference. But another part of me thinks I need to continue to live my life as normal!

Thanks for listening to my random rant :)

Well my RE's office said flying is ok as long as I wasn't gone for an extended amount of time or going overseas. However, as for taking something to relax you on the plane if you have a BFP......ehhhhh, I wouldn't but you might want to check with your RE if you face this situation.

Poor Girl..you sound like me when it comes to flying lol.. I would think the flying would be ok, maybe not the anxiety meds.. I would definitely just ask you RE about it and see what he recommends.. Good luck! And remember, your safer in a plane than in a car! At least I try to tell myself that over and over as we take off..:)

TTC since 11/11. 10 months natural= 10 BFN 8/12 First appt with RE 4 semen anaylsis later 1.9 million count, 21% motility and very poor morphology Me- bloodwork, 2 ultrasounds, HSG exam =I'm fine 3 months of testosterone treatments = 3 more BFN DH bkoodwork after 3 months treatment= no change RE says we can continue with hormone treatment for MIF, But says it could be year or more to see results that would even make us IUI candidates RE says we can try IUI but doesn't expect the results to be good based on severe MIF. 12/12 decide to move forward with IVF Started IVF Cycle #1 1/11/13

I'm allowed to travel once I get a BFP or BFN. I see no problems flying. Personally, I always opt out of the body scanner but I don't think that's a necessity. I'm just kind of old fashion like that I guess. I would worry about the stress though... is there any other way to get to the conference? I believe that Xanax and Valium are both dangerous during pregnancy Sad   but I'm not positive on that. If you need to fly I would just do whatever you can to minimize your stress level - listen to relaxing music, meditate, eat junk food, whatever you can! If I were you I would still go and feel fine about it if that helps any. I'm sorry you have to think about it. Like IVF isn't stressful enough!

TTC #1 for Dh, #2 for me. HSG clear. Low AMH and endo. Multiple Clomid w/TI cycles - all BFNs. 2 IUIs with Clomid and 1 with Femara - more BFNs. IVF#1 25R, 15M, 15F. 5DT of two perfect 4AA blasts! Positive HPT at 5dp5dt. Beta #1 6dp5dt - 72. Beta #2 8dp5dt - 285. Beta #3 10dp5dt - 793. Both babies have strong beautiful heartbeats! Baby B miscarried at 7 weeks. Baby A is holding on through miscarrying her twin, sub-chorionic hematoma, and complete placenta previa. Stick, baby, stick!

So Xanax and Valium aren't *great* during pregnancy....to be taken on a routine basis, but doing it for this should be ok. Talk to your RE or your OBGYN. It's probably the lesser of the evils if you're going to get that stressed out over flying and speaking.

Good luck!

You'll be fine to fly.  I know you want IVF #1 to work, but don't put your life on hold for it.  Maybe a Benadryl for the flight?

DH diagnosed with Azoospermia in January 2012
Vas reconstruction surgery in April 2012; unsuccessful
IVF with ICSI February 2013; single blastocyst 5dt

Xanax and valium are unsafe during pregnancy and can increase the chance of cleft lip and palate. Both are category D.  Diphenhydramine (benadryl) is category B.

While this is true, this info refers to chronic use of any of this class of drugs. Again, my suggestion would be to discuss it with your RE, but at 5-6 weeks preggo, before organs start to form, and doing 2 or maybe 3 doses, probably acceptable risk if it's acceptable to you to take the risk.  Good luck with your trip and your speech and ESPECIALLY your cycle!

Thank you guys for all the advice! I will talk to my RE and probably just try some relaxation techniques, listen to my music, and zone out as much as I can. I just hate that I can't listen to my music during take off and landing, which is when I need it most! It's just the feeling of being utterly out of control that makes me anxious. Kinda like IVF! Ha! Just gotta go with the flow and whatever happens, happens :)
