Don't fully bathe a baby until the chord falls off. Sponge bath for now until then!

Sponge bath until it falls off. If you really want you could probably wash hair and stuff but be really careful about not getting the water anywhere near cord. I would just wait though.

It's okay to do a tub bath with a newborn. I did a lot of research on it as a student, and it is supported by studies. Tub baths are tolerated better by babies, help with temperature regulation and have no effect on cord healing when compared to sponge baths. Just don't let LO soak in the tub longer than it takes to wash them, and be sure to dry the cord thoroughly.

My LO was pretty happy in the water, and her stump came off at 9 days, no problems healing.

When we left the nicu the nurses told us we could sponge or submerge him but that if the cord got wet we needed to let it air dry completely before putting any clothes on him. Well it got wet by accident when we were trying to soak the gauze off his circ. We let it dry but it still got...oozey around the edges. It remained oozey for a week and then fell off. His pedi saw him during that time and said it was ok as long asit wasnt showing signs of infections. The ooze was unsettling though...I will probably avoid getting it wet at all with my next one.
