Irregular Cycle Post BC- Month 6

Ok this month I am at the 6 month mark of being off BCPs and my cycle has been a rollercoaster. The first two months I had SUPER heavy bleeding followed by very light bleeding for the the next couple of months (didn't even need a tampon) and last month and this month my cycle has been super long (currently on day 45) and even when AF comes I  only need a panty liner for 1 day at best.

Is it time to see my Doctor or should I wait another month or two?

How do your charts look? Are you ovulating? If so, I feel like I wouldn't be too worried about flow and duration of menstruation.

I haven't started charting yet but I was thinking about starting with my next cycle.

I would definitely chart a couple cycles before you go to see a doctor. If nothing else, that will give you more info to share with the doc.

Now, I don't know much about BC, but I have heard that it can take some time for your body to regulate. Best of luck!

OP-have you ever thought of trying or tried acupuncture?  Prior to me being on BCP I was very irregular, was on BCP for 6 years and decided to try acupuncture to regulate my cycles when coming off BCP (and having surgery that cost me an ovary).  The acupuncture has worked wonders for me, I'm a very regular 28 day cycle now, something that I've never been before, my cycles prior to BCP were 35-40 days.  Just a thought as another option to try and regulate things for you Big Smile

That's actually not a bad idea, thanks Emerald!

I agree with the pp, I'd start charting. It will give you a better idea of what is happening, which will also help give the doctor more information when/if you go see him.

Also, how were your cycles before you went on BC? I went on BC because I had irregular cycles, so it wasn't a big surprise to see that I had irregular after I went off BC.

Edit: fixing typo

It's so funny that you mentioned this because I was really intrigued by the thought last week when someone else posted about something acupuncture related...definitely something I'd be open to and may look into in the next couple of months.

I guess I shouldn't be suprised that this is happening since I've been on BC for 12 years, I don't even remember what my period was like before I started taking the pill.

You should try it!  I'm a 100% believer in it.  I never got a chance to see what my periods would be like off BCP without acupuncture but after I lost an ovary I felt like I didn't have time messing around with an irregular cycle.  I currently do a combination of bi-weekly acupuncture and daily herbal supplements from my acupuncturist (pill form).  I finally just started charting consistently this cycle so I'm anxious to see how my temps play out for an entire cycle

I think my cycle really regulated around 6 months (I was on BCP for 13 yrs). The first couple cycles were long too (about 40-50 days). I would try charting for a couple cycles and see how it goes.

I have been off BCP for 6 months too. Not ttc the whole time, but charting the whole time. I would try charting a few months, so you have more to share with your doctor. But if it's really bothering you, I don't think it would hurt to talk to them now either.

My cycles post BCP were normal up until about 6 or 7  months.  Then I had a few super long cycles (60ish days) then my body regulated itself and went back to 27 days.  It was really strange.  Looking back on it it could have been stress making those two cycles extra long.  Have you thought about that?  They say it can take a year to regulate after coming off BC.

I don't think I was more stressed than usual but I did come off of zoloft at around the same time. In October I also get a flu shot and Tdap within 2 weeks of each other..I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

It could have.  Our bodies react in many different ways to changes in meds.  I'd keep an eye on it and if things haven't returned to normal in a cycle or two call your doctor.

 Good luck!
