Allie....

I really like the name Allie but don't LOVE any names that it could be a NN for. Do I really need a formal name or can it stand on its own?

DD is Kate who ended up with a NN Katie. Also would you ever make the connection between the 80's sitcom "Kate and Allie"? I wouldn't have but someone pointed that out to me. I'm hardly old enough to recall it at all!

Not every name has to have a nick name for it, so if you like Allie, use it. I think Katie and Allie are cute together!

I would only suggest using a "formal" name so that she has options later in life.  It isn't a big deal but it is a consideration.  You can call her Allie all the time but it gives her the option of going by something a little more formal later.

Plus, my daughter is Allison so I'm kinda partial to the name!

Lurker here... Just wanted to mention that my cousin just had a baby girl and named her Allie Rose. No "formal" name.

I agree. However, if you love Allie, go for it!

I didn't get the Kate and Allie reference until you said.  Ha.  That was such a good show.

I wouldn't name my kid Allie as a stand alone name, but there are worse things in the world.

Ditto. I also like Allison. My niece is Alexandra and we call her Allie sometimes.

I'd never make the "Kate & Allie" association.

My DH suggested Alexandra with the nickname Allie since I'm not a fan of Alex for a girl. That's something besides Allison.

I agree with PPs though that I would not do Allie as a stand alone name.

No, I wouldn't make the Kate and Allie connection.

I also agree w/ pp — I would use a formal name. I say that mostly because I have a juvenile-sounding name and it is a pain in the butt.

I have a friend named Abby...no formal name, just Abby so I think it's perfectly fine to go with Allie.

I'm 30 years old and have never heard of the show Kate and Allie.

I liked Allie as a nn when I was pg but didn't like any of the formal names so I nixed it. You can name her Allie but I personally don't like it as a formal name... To much of a nn imo.

I've never watched it but I did think Kate and Allie since my mom used to watch it. Not a huge deal, especially if you use Allie as a nickname. I would give her a formal name...Allie just sounds too young/informal to me. I love Allie too but don't like Allison. Alice, Alicia, Alissa/Alyssa, Alina, Alisa, Alida, Aliya, Allegra? Or maybe even something like Natalie or Talia that contains the 'al' sound?

I would probably do a formal name to give her options.  I like the pp's suggestion of "Alexandra."  (I like "Allison" too, though).

I did think briefly of "Kate and Allie," but I'm super old.  I wouldn't let that deter me.

DH's best friends have a little girl named Allie-- just Allie.

I think it's strange, honestly, and I always think it's nice to have a formal name as an option to fall back on for when your LO isn't so little anymore.

I also would not make that connection to the sitcom and I am old enough to remember 80s TV.

I'm 43, and I didn't know the dates the show ran; just that it was in the 80's.  Relax, you won't be super old for at least 10 years or so.  Stick out tongue

My name is Allison Kate :) Just thought that was neat!

Anyways, maybe Allesandra, Alexandra, Alexis, Alicia, Allysa, Allysabeth.

I went to school with an Alicia who went by Ally, my best friend calls her Allysa Ally, and I saw on some parenting site someone named their little girl Allysabeth and called her Ally.

I think Allie by itself is cute though! If you like it, go for it!

Is Allysabeth supposed to be Elisabeth or Alyssa Beth?!

And I've ways seen the "proper Italian" form of Allesandra being Alessandra.. I suggest using the proper spelling, not butchering the name!

Yes, I would get the TV reference, but that wouldn't stop me.

However, I like formal names with NN.

I do not like Nickname names as FN.

So I would Allie or Alexandra with NN Allie.

I know a couple of people that have named their daughters just Allie. One is Allie Reese and one is Allie Lynn.

I like it, but I do prefer more of a formal name. DD1 is Allison, but we just call her Allie.

Allie ~ 01/26/09 ~ 7 lbs, 9 oz ~ 20.75 in. & Amelia ~ 03/16/11 ~ 8 lbs, 1 oz ~ 21 in.

My SIL is Allie, and her full name is Alexandra. I don't think there's anything wrong with using Allie, but there are sooooo many Al- names that you could use. You really don't like any of them?

For a unique example, my sister's name is Aleda (al-ay-da). She wanted to go by Allie in HS, but no one caught on.

Other Al- names:

Alethia

Alessandra

Alana

Alma

Allison

Alicia

Alice

Alia

I think Allie as a stand alone name is fine. Whatever floats your boat.

We are naming DD Alice and I'll be calling her Ali as a NN.
