Do you swaddle? Use white noise?

Swaddling is pretty helpful. Although it seems like he might not like it, when you leave their arms free, every time their muscles jerk it's going to wake him up, which is probably what's happening. A tight swaddle with his arms at his side with some rocking should get him calm enough to lay down. If he is able to fight his arms out it usually means the swaddle wasn't done correct. He spent the last trimester of your pregnancy pretty packed in there 24 hours a day, so swaddling reminds them of being back in the uterus, which will help them sleep deeper. White noise is really helpful too.

I have to hold my 4w old for at least 20 min after he falls asleep before I can put him down. He also didn't like swaddling at first but now is ok with it, but always manages to get his hands out during his sleep.

I would also recommend a tight swaddle. My LO didn't like it at first either, but she sleeps so much better now.

Keep holding him! I did that a lot when DS what that young. You are kind of at their mercy until they figure things out. Swaddle, swaddle, swaddle.

My kids all hated being swaddled. Make sure the house temp is between 68 and 72, and that baby is dressed warm but not hot. Have you tried putting LO to sleep on his/her side? Also, try putting LO down drowsy vs just fell asleep in your arms... DD hated being transferred while asleep and always needed to be held... But if I put her down drowsy she would sleep fine on her own. GL!

Sadly, whatever schedule your baby creates for the first 6 weeks is what you have to obey. Swaddling does wonders though! My lo is 5 weeks and about 2 weeks ago we finally got the hang of a really good swaddle (we cheat with the swaddle sacks by halo) and he sleeps wonderfully now! We also let him fall asleep while eating, then tummy time on our chests to help him burp without patting his back. Then when he's cool with us moving him without him waking, we swaddle him. He'll sleep for about 5-6 hours at night now... Swaddling can really help everyone out!
