First internal - UGH!

I'm getting my first internal next week and I am FREAKING out! I have no idea why..perhaps it's because quite frankly the thought of anything near my vagina makes me shudder LOL.

Do I have any reason to be nervous?

It isn't the most pleasant experience in the world but it's not that bad either and it's pretty quick. A piece of cake compared to everything that goes on when you're in actual labor.

An internal at 34 weeks is completely unnecessary. I'd decline it.

What is the reason for it anyway? That sounds so naive

If you don't want it, don't do it. It's not necessary, especially at 34w.

More often then not the reason is to see if your making progress, effacement and dilation. But at 34 weeks that seems extremely early to start checking, at least if you haven't had any problems or complaints to justify it.

i agree. Not only is it unnecessary but why risk an infection?

You can decline that.  It is not standard practice at my office, only by request.  They don't really tell you anything and are not medically necessary for the most part (if yours is, then ignore that).

Expecting our second baby on February 7, 2013. Trusting Him whatever comes our way.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011 at 20 weeks. She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

I had one last week and it didn't hurt at all.

I agree with pps that 34 weeks is super early to be checked.

I'm assuming I'm getting an internal because they want me to meet with a certain DR. in my group who is the one who has always given me exams prior to getting pregnant. So I could be totally wrong.

I'm not one to get overly concerned about internals or no internals and the risks, but that's definately early if there's no other reason than just to check.

That being said, I never found mine to be a big deal at all.

I only had one internal prior to my water breaking with DS, and, I mean, it wasn't my favorite pregnancy experience. It's not comfortable, but it's not unbearable. It wasn't painful and I didn't have any spotting/bleeding afterward, like I've heard some people do.

It feels better than a pap to me. At least there's no scraping. ::shudders:: I hate that feeling.

Also this. I didn't see your ticker until after I posted.

Do they have a reason why....? I have an appointment tomorrow, and I'll be almost 38 weeks and they most likely won't do one until my next appointment.

I wouldn't be getting one so early.   Can you ask them to wait a few weeks? Espscially since you seem so nervous.

I had my first internal today and it was uncomfortable, painful and I bled afterwards.  Right before the exam I had a speculum inserted to check for fluid leaking so maybe the one right after the other made it worse than it actually is.  Or the nurse was just rough.

I think it depends on who does it.  My first one at 38 weeks was very unpleasant.  The second one less so.

I didn't think it was any worse than a pap.

At worst it's like 2.5 seconds of being uncomfortable. But like everyone else said, why so early? Very odd.

1. Perhaps you should tell the doctor about your misgivings, and ask why he/she feels the internal is necessary at this time.

2. This is complete snark here, but isn't it a bit late to be squeamish about things near your vagina? ;P

I'm with you - I'm unusually nervous about having anything there right now and was very  nervous about my first internal at 37 weeks.  It was fine though, didn't hurt at all.  But I kind of jumped when she did it but just cause of my anxiety.  She told me that the baby's head is extremely low, that she barely needed to enter to do the exam.  So maybe that's why I'm so nervous about anything being near there (cause I realize that the baby is right there - protective instincts).

Yes - I know ALL of this is childish since I'm weeks away from a LOT more craziness down there.

Are you sure that you're getting an internal?  You might just be getting the GBS swab.

I will be 38 weeks tomorrow and have yet to have an internal this pregnancy.  With my DD, I think that my first was around 37 weeks because I was having some issues.

but to answer your question....it's not pleasant, but it's not horrible either.  I hated when they checked while I was in labor though.

I think most OBs wait until 36 weeks. I would ask what the reason was. They are not comfortable, but tolerable.

Afterwards, I wondered if the nurse had actually done a membrane sweep since I was so crampy for so long afterward. I have another appt tomorrow and will be seeing the doctor this time so I'm going to mention something to her.
