How much does a typical child birth cost?

Hi my name is Allyse, I am currently engaged.. My fiance and I have been having talks about children and stuff after we get married and were looking over his insurance papers he has Blue Cross Blue Shield Community Blue of Michigan... I'm not going to be on his insurance until we get married but it says that labor and delivery are covered 70% and we pay the other 30%. I have a child from a previoius relationship but was on state medical assistance so I never got a bill for child birth, It was a complicated delivery I had to have an emergency c-section and then he stopped breathing so was rushed away from me for a day with a bunch of tests being doing. Were trying to save for the wedding as well as for trying to start a family shortly after.
I was just curious to see how everyones expenses were based on their deliverys.

I honestly don't remember what my total bill was before insurance. I only had a maximum OOP of like $5k so I didn't need to worry about percentages. You might want to ask over on the baby boards, though (Newborn - 3 months, 6-9, etc).  They might have fresher memories of their bills.

Mine was far from a typical birth due to several issues with me but I think I only paid about 3K out of pocket in hosipital bills when all was said and done.  I didn't pay anything for all my prenatal care though.

Fingers crossed for a sticky baby this time! Beta #1 41, Beta #2 59, Beta #3 106, Beta #4 219 (finally doubling!!!) Beta #5 510 Beta #6 1060 Heartbeat (126 bpm) at 6w1d! Hooray!!! Lilypie Pregnancy tickers Lilypie Fourth Birthday tickers

A good friend of mine paid a grand total of 30 as a specialist co pay, and everything else related to check ups, lab work, labor and delivery was all covered 100 under our current health insurance which currently costs us 45/2 weeks. I am praying the insurance stays that good for me for if I get KU! We have.Cigna health insurance.

Untrue. This generally only applies to individual policies. Group plans they go into effect immediately.

My uncomplicated c/s was around $20k. This does not count the 2AM trip to L&D at around 26 weeks for bleeding and my 2 or 3 extra ultrasounds.

A non-complicated week in the NICU was another $25k.

Find out what our OOP max is and be prepared to reach it.

ETA: Unless you have awesome coverage. You do not have awesome coverage.

Why? You pay more in taxes for your coverage than I pay OOP most years (including premiums). Not everyone has crap coverage, and yours is not "free" like so many claim.

Oh.

I pay for health insurance and I paid 10,000 out of pocket, insurance paid 20,000. I labored for 36 hours and pushed for five hours. Had an epi, then c section do to doctors getting bored lol. I was also induced three days prior to water breaking, but yhaty didn't do a thing but cost me 1200, which I included above.they also use a suction cup about 3 times, which they charge you for.

they did tell me that mine was 1 of the more expensive births! Thank God everyone was healthy afterwards! :-)

My OOP was 2K with my HMO.  Without insurance it would have been 100K.  This includes 9 days in the NICU for my little one.

They induced you just because they were bored?  Are you sure it isn't because it appear your labor might have stalled/were struggling?  That seems pretty extreme all because they want to do something else.

Don't forget about deductibles either. I have always been very healthy and not really used my insurance much, so I learned the hard way recently. I found out that I was pregnant right around thanksgiving and went for initial prenatal care. I ended up miscarrying at 6 weeks, but have since been getting all the medical bills for the prenatal care. I had not paid any towards my 750 deductible so I paid that first and I pay 20 after that. In all, I've paid about 1300 and was only pregnant for 6 weeks. So check about your deductibles and remember that most facilities bill everything separately; lab work, dr fees, etc.

Good news is since all this happened in the last quarter of the year, my deductible rolls over for 2013. So I will only have to pay copays and 20 for this year.

What's your deductible and copay? It will get adjusted down to preferred rates (I think mine went down to like $11k), then those will apply to that amount. With $1,000 deductible and 80/20 co-insurance after that, you would owe $3,000.

With 70/30 coinsurance I would bet her preferred rates aren't very good and there is a fairly high deductible.

I agree that we need your deductible as well. And remember that you and your baby count as two people, so you pay two deductibles.

Since you had a previous c-section, I am guessing that you will have another, unless you plan a VBAC. Costs can vary dramatically, but I think around 20k is around the average (you can usually look up average costs by hospital).

So assuming 20k, then your 30% is 6k. Plus you have to add the two deductibles.

I would also look at what your out of pocket max is. That will give you an idea of the worst case scenario.

I think ours was about $9K? I pay the high tier health insurance to make it a flat rate versus a percentage ... so it was $300 OOP.

An uncomplicated vaginal delivery with epidural is approximately 12,500 in Iowa. A scheduled c-section is approximately 17,500.

But there a million variables that can affect this quote.

Oh, I know. We have a HDHP plan. 3k deductible with 80 20 coinsurance. So, we will owe a decent amount. I didn't think about hitting my OOP because I don't think the bills after negotiated rates will add up to be that high, this thread just scared me, lol.

I think she meant for the other charges that will incur (exams, shots, room fee, etc) for the baby while at the hospital.

Even though DD stayed in my room every.single.night, we got a bill (under her name) for them to have/hold a spot for her in the nursery.

I actually had to have a sphincterplasty & perenium repair from damage that occured from the delivery, I was able to cover the entire cost of surgery because with L&D and DS's NICU I met the deductible.

I guess it is technically not for the birth, but like Mrs. Mo said, you get charged for the baby's stay...which I count as the birth since it is connected. You have to be seen by the pediatrician, they do tests, etc.

We stayed a little over 24 hours after DD's birth. She stayed in our room the entire time, yet she still racked up thousands of dollars in bills. It easily hit my deductible.

Now my current plan is a high deductible plan, so we have a family deductible and it doesn't matter who costs money. It really depends on your plan.
