Cleaning used gear

I would like to get a rainforest jumperoo and a playmat. I find them on craigslist (used) for half what I would pay on amazon or Target. Of course, my biggest concern is making sure that they are clean/sanitized before coming into my home. (and easy to wash once my babe dirtys them)

Because the toys on a jumperoo are in the babe's mouth, how would you clean them? Just lysol wipes? Can the seat come off and be washed in the washer? Can most playmats be disassembled so that the mat can be washed? (FTM here!)

I've scored a bumbo ($10), boppy($10), FP snuggabunny swing ($35) & Johnny Jump Up $20)!

One more question- I see tons of nursing pumps used. First thought is GROSS, but just wondering what you think... TIA

We bought a bumbo, swing, tub, and playmat from Craigslist, washed the cloth parts  in the washer, used Lysol wipes in the rest, rinsed the toys off afterwards.

I thought the same thing about used pumps, but a friend told me with many kinds, you can buy replacement parts inexpensively (tubes, etc) so its not like the 'leftovers' from the previous mom would still be in there (ewww). Maybe call the manufacturer of the one you're looking to buy 2nd hand to see if this is possible and what the cost would be to see if it's worth it.

Oh and I've found that most companies are more than willing to mail you a copy of the users manual, or they offer them on their website, just in case the previous owner didn't include it. That would tell you exactly how to remove the seat of your jumperoo if it is possible...and the quilt part of our playmat and the arch things unsnapped in the corners to take it apart.

The only way I would purchase a used pump is if it was a closed system.  Medela pumps are open systems which means that it cannot be guaranteed that milk did not back up into the motor at some point (through the tubing...you can clean/sterilize tubing but can't really open pump to clean the motor).  Do your research and make sure that it is a closed system before buy a pump...someone could clean a Medela up and make it look brand new with instruction manuals/etc but it's still an open system and you cannot guarantee the motor/insides are ok.

We have the rainforest jumperoo. The seat is easily removed and is machine washable. The toys can be wiped for maintenance, but if you're concerned, they are removable for a good bleach/water bath. In other words, don't hesitate to buy this used. My son loved it and its been passed around to 2 of my neighbors and we will be using it again.

They say not to buy electric pumps used but I think that's a load of crap. The milk never touches the pump. You only need to buy new flanges, tubes, etc. The "pump" is just a motor. BRU and most hospitals sell kits with the other parts. Check with your insurance to see what they cover for a pump. I think Obamacare requires them to pay for all or most pump rentals or purchases now.

This last part.  I think insurance companies have to cover them now.

I have a grandfathered plan... So our plan doesnt have to follow that rule. Btw, if you have a grandfathered plan you would know by now, I think they have to disclose it. And it usually means the other plan options go above and beyond what is required.

It's easy to clean activity mat - you can wash it in the washing machine.  I bought mine used and washed it w/bleach in the machine, then put it out in full sun for several hours.

If it was a closed system pump and I knew the person, I would use a used pump.  Otherwise no way.

I just got the Rainforest Jumperoo off Craigslist for $30.  I was pretty happy.  It was faded a litte and kinda dirty, but I used Lysol, paper towels, and qtips to get it all clean.  The removable toys I ran through the dishwasher.  The seat does not come off but I just used Lysol on that as well and rubbed some spots out.  I got a used playmat for free and it completely came apart so all the hard toys I put in the dishwasher (on the top rack) and all the fabric stuff I put in the washer and air dried.

Just go and look at them and if you don't like how they look, don't buy.

Good to know--I'll have to find that.  Thanks!
