Swaddle Weaning

LO sleeps at night swaddled. She also naps in her swaddle because it allows her to nap for hours. I am thinking of weaning her off of it in the next month. Whats the quickest way to do this?? Id like to do it before she transitions to her crib.

Why would you want to wean LO off? They can sleep in the crib swaddled...

Is there a reason you want to wean her out of it? On my other BMB, most moms sused the swaddle as long as physically possible (usually close to 6 months I believe). I forget how I weaned though so no advice. I believe it just got to the point where no swaddle method would contain my son. I see it as a tool that I was definitely not ready to give up so soon.

ditto the PP...there's no reason you HAVE to stop swaddling until they roll over. If your LO sleeps well when they're swaddled, why would you want to mess with that?

We use the Halo swaddle/sleepsack on DS.  the Halo allows us to swaddle arms in or arms out.  DS is a houdini so he gets his arms out pretty often anyway.  However, for the last few nights, we purposefully swaddled him with one arm out and one arm in.  FWIW, he slept even longer the past few nights w/one arm out!

We decided to leave his arm out (R arm) because he fights the swaddle so much and he's gotten so strong that his R arm is lifting the swaddle part up - essentially pushing it over his face.  I don't like that and that's why the de-swaddling.

Oh, and after MOTN feed, we leave BOTH arms out.  DS goes into light sleep mode towards the morning, which means he struggles more against the swaddle.  When we leave both arms out, he doesn't have to struggle and is less restless.

I'd like to wean our LO as well. It seems to be the ONLY way she'll sleep for hours like your LO. I've heard it's not good for their hips..I don't know if there's any truth to that, but I'd just like to get her out of it. I've tried several times and it hasn't worked. Some have said when she's ready, we'll know & to do it as long as she's not rolling over. She's almost 2 months old and I feel like she may be getting close to rolling over. My fear is that I won't have her weaned from it & she'll start rolling over. Then how am I suppose to get her to sleep!?!

Simply stop swaddling, I dont think you can 'wean' them really. If LO isn't ready be prepared for many sleepless nights and a cranky LO. The hip issue is if you swaddle the bottom part too tight and they cant move their legs.

Agreed to just stop. I don't think there's really a method to wean...

Just to add...it's pretty unusual for babies to roll over at 2 months. Some can around 3, but I think the "average" is closer to 4 or 5 months. Swaddling is perfectly fine until then, or when your LO struggles so hard against it that they wake up more than if their arms were out.

A lot of moms on my BMB are talking about a Magic Sleep Suit. It's supposed to be a good transition from swaddling.

Um, why? If LO enjoys it, and is getting sleep because of it, why stop? I'm failing to see the necessity here. If I had a sure-fire way of LO sleeping for a good while, no way I'd be giving that up at only 2 months!

I don't believe there is much of a "transition" from swaddling. Just stop if that is what you're wanting to do...

I agree with the others - if it's working, why stop?  My DS was swaddled for 6 months.  I tried to stop at 4 months, did one arm out, Then cold turkey and after a week of bad sleep just gave in and kept swaddling.  At 6 months, he was busting out every hour and waking up more, so it was time.  He was a terrible sleeper anyway, so we did ferber and after a week he was putting himself to sleep without crying and no swaddle.  My DD did great - we stopped her at 2 months and she slept better without it.   So far DD#2 is more like DS, so I have no plans to unswaddle her any time soon!

I'd start trying to nap without it first and if that goes well, then try overnight.

I weaned with one arm out for naps. I didn't stop until 5 months though. My kids hated the crib unswaddled until then. You can swaddle until they roll over.

The whole idea of weaning her from it was to avoid a cranky LO.

DD#1 slept swaddled for 5 months. We knew she was ready to go to bed unswaddled when she kept breaking loose from the swaddle. We used A+A blankets for swaddling and she still loves sleeping with these blankets in her crib as a comfort thing. They are so light weight I never worried about her suffocating with them in the crib either.

edit: Also, that is when we switched her from bassinet to crib, when she was breaking lose from the swaddle and we stopped swaddling at 5months.

First off I dont believe she asked peoples opinions of whether she should or not...secondly, its absolutely her decision thirdly...my lo rolled over at 36 weeks (originally a 28 weeker) so i understand not wanting to stall development...drs office told us to try the halo sleeper bc you can slowly leave one arm then the other...

lol.

1. No one was mean in their reply; genuine curiosity and befuddlement, but not snarky.

2. I'm failing to see where people are saying it isn't her decision.

It takes them a while to learn to roll in the swaddle. DD1 could roll over around 3 months I think but she didn't learn to roll in the swaddle until 4.5 months.  It is a lot harder to roll over without use of your arms or legs.  I have no advice for your question, we had to stop when she learned to roll.  Sometimes I wish I could still swaddle her at 29months.  At least that way she would stay in bed, lol.
