Yay or nay?

I keep going back and forth about putting a breast pump on my registry.  Part of me thinks that it is A LOT of money to ask someone or a group to spend, along with the semi-weirdness about the topic and thinking that it is more of a personal thing that I might want to purchase on my own.. so first, opinions on that please!

Second.. if you are pro adding it to the registry, what accessories do you recommend?

I personally am not a fan of registering for a breast pump.  Not because it is too much money, as I see the registry more as a check list for yourself than a demand list of buy me this.

Many hospitals rent pumps for a cheaper price.  Also some insurances pay for a pump. I suggest looking into both of those.  I personally would rather rent to make sure it works for me before purchasing one.  It is great that you want to bf but logistically you might not be able to so IMO it would be better to make sure this is something you can/want to do before you invest in a pump.

I originally put the $40 Medela manual breast pump on my registry because I wanted to get it for myself with the completion coupon. The pump was not something I was expecting people to buy. However, I ended up taking it off the registry today because I just found out that my insurance will cover an electric breast pump. So as the PP mentioned, you should check with your insurance to see if they will cover a pump for you.

Add it. Even if no one gets it for you then you can still you the completion coupon for the discount on it. While manual pumps are covered a dual electric is still so much more time efficient, especially if you are going back to work and pumping there.

Also check to see if you can get a discount on an electric pump from your insurance company. Discount + completion coupon= :)

meh. if you want one, put it on there. I don't know why anyone would side eye it.

I put the Medela Pump In Style on our registry because insurance will only cover a manual pump. This way I can get it with the completion coupon.

I put the Medela PISA on my registry solely intending to use the completion discount later, and my SIL (a nurse) bought it for me. I also had a manual pump on there (I read it's good to have on hand for engorgement issues) and my coworker (a nurse) bought it for me.

I even told them at my shower "I kept asking myself, who would seriously buy somone else a breast pump? Apparently, a nurse will buy someone else a breast pump."

So, you never know.

Oooh a breast pump can be such a great thing. I opted for the Philips Avent Electric Breast Pump. I think it came to about $45... I decided to just go ahead and get it myself, but definitely a good purchase.

I put my pump and all kinds of accessories on there and I didn't feel weird about it. I included freezer bags, extra pump parts, extra membranes, lanolin, and quick clean wipes. My mom bought all of it.

YAY!

Throw that breast pump on your registry!  You get a discount on it later (usually 10%), so why not?  I don't think it's tacky at all!  My insurance company did not cover my breast pump rental (and I'm beginning to think this is becoming more rare in our economy, but I could be wrong).

Certain items may speak to people who are shopping for you - you might get lucky!  I was shocked when people got some of the items on my registry for me!  It was great, and I was so thankful!

I added it to my regisry and got it.  Also, I would include the bags for milk storage, lanolin, plus a couple more bottles.

I would not worry about the cost since people can go in together to purchase it if they want to (that is what they did for me...actually it was put in a basket will a bunch of accessories).  My breast pump was less expensive then many things I've seen on some MTB's registries.

All of this. My insurance company paid for a portion of it. Next time, I'm renting the symphony from the hospital though.

I didn't want my aunts and uncles and cousins to see my registry and it be in their face that I was going to breastfeed. I purchased all of those personal items myself. They had plenty of other things to choose from :)

I would (and did) register for it. I would call your insurance first to see if they cover it but if not (or they only cover a manual), put it on there to at the very least get the completion discount.  I ended up buying my own so I'm glad I had the discount. We also had things like freezer bags and nursing pads on there, and an extra set of parts.

Also, I don't know if hospitals  have gotten cheaper but it was in no way cheaper to rent from a hospital than buy my own, unless I was only BFing for 2 months. I don't think there is anything wrong with renting for a month to make sure everything is working out okay with BFing/pumping (which I did) but in the long run, it's cheaper to own one.

We didn't... just felt it was a little too awkward for us, plus we both work in high schools and many of our students and their parents are very generous...it crossed my mind that someone might log onto our registry and...well...I don't know...just made me a little uncomfortable. But I certainly wouldn't judge someone who put one on theirs.

Plus we're waiting for a call back from the insurance company on whether or not they will cover it...fingers crossed!!

Most insurances DON'T cover the rental. Renting from the hospital and insurance covering some or all of a breast pump are two different things.

I registered for one, and several family members went in together to get it. It was an awesome gift. Also, I know every hospital does their own thing, might mine gives out manual pumps to moms who want them.
