Honest Thoughts on Flow

Just a random exmaple not really a name I like, but for the question, let's say we like the name Hazel, which ends in L. But if our last name is Lindhurst (similar)- does Hazel Lindhurst sound like Hazel Indhurst?

I feel like it bothers me more with names ending in hard sound (think Mike Carson) but not sure if it bothers me as much with our last name. I don't know if it's worth crossing off every name that ends in L or not.

Thoughts? Do any of you have names that end in the same letter as your last name? Or do your kiddos?

I don't really like when the last letter of a fn is the same as the first letter of the last name in general. Some letters are easier thanothers though, like R is easier than N .

That's actually one of DH's rules.  He doesn't want any name ending in a N since our last name starts with an N and he thinks it runs together too much.  Unfortunate because it actually eliminates a fair amout of boys names I like.  And the funny thing is both his name and my name end in an N.

To me, it depends on the name.  I think some do flow together too much, but it works for others.

My nieces name is Emma Amelia and I feel like Emma eats up the first part of Amelia and they sound terrible together.  So yeah - I agree

In a perfect world, you wouldn't have that repetition... but it's not a perfect world.  If you love the first name, go for it.

I think it sounds fine with L's like in your example. I agree that it's much worse with hard sounds.

Our last name has a strong "K". I was very crazy and not only knocked out anything ending in "c" and "k" but also beginning with those letters. It bugs me, it doesn't bug others.

My first name ends with M and so does my last name. It's not a big deal at all. I think the double L sounds fine too. It works for some names and not others.

This. Some names with the same ending sound might be ok while others might definitely not.

This.  I'm not a fan of eliding sounds either, but the L elision is not bothering me here.

My name starts with A ends with A and my first name with A. its my user name if you look.

It works okay. The A's in Alyssa make an uh sound and the A in my last name says A. They don't blend.

I think the L's work fine in your name.

In general, I do mind. But not with vowels (like Alyssa A*es) and the L in your example works fine too. I love Hazel, even if that's not the name you're considering.

I agree it's worst with harder letters, but the last name for our kid starts with an F and it doesn't work either (think Ralph Ford - it's terrible, IMHO).

I also don't like alliteration, so most names starting with an F are out too, and because DH has a stammer, all names with K/C (pronounced K) and T are out too. Luckily, I tend not to like those.

Also, from the title of your thread, I though you wanted to name your daughter Flow. Yay pregnancy brain!

Ha! My name does the same. But the A sounds in my first name are not the same as my last, so it's not a big deal. I think it's a case-by-case basis. I wouldn't go for Hannah Harbaugh, but I would do something like Harlow Williams.

DD'S name has the hard C sound as does our last name so it does sound very sing-songy, but I loved her name, so that loved trumped the flow. I think in your situation it sounds fine. I think it just depends on how much you love a name and how much flow matters to you.

Not a fan.  I want people to pronounce each name.  I feel like it's when kids say the alphabet and say LaMenOP.  Instead of L, M, N, O, P.

I'd take it on a case by case basis, it can work.

My son's FN ends with a K and our LN starts with a hard C.  When I say his name I say Hank (pause) C.........  I am very particular about speech.  VERY.

So, while it can all run together, I don't let it.

I don't think it sounds as bad as the ones ending in a hard sound, like you mentioned.  If it was your favorite name, I'd do it.

I never thought about it but my daughter is Allison Nicole...doesn't bother me at all.  But that is a FN/MN combo.  I don't really think it would bug me if it was how you mentioned in your post.  I did stay away from girl names that end with A because I didn't like how it sounded with my last name (also ends with an A).

Haha... I did too! And I thought "Why would she spell it Flow instead of Flo?".

OP: I think there are some names where it doesn't work, but in general it's not a big concern and doesn't need to be a rule to avoid. Just try it out with any name you are thinking and see how it sounds.

Our son is Atticus; his middle and last names BOTH start with an S sound.

While I don't think it's ideal flow, and I shared your concerns, we loved the name enough to do it anyway.

I wouldn't focus too much on last name since hers will be changing eventually anyway :)
