Short Cervix!?!

At 18 weeks I was check and had a 3.6 cm cervix today at week 20 I measured at 3.1cm I need to go back and get checked in three weeks to see where I am at and if I need to get a stitch. I was offered the shot to prevent a preterm delivery but I do not want to take that shot for many different reasons. I do not want this stitch for lots of reasons also is their any thing I can do to prevent my cervix from shortening like I was told to use progestin cream does any one know if that works? Any advice or help will be greatly appreciated!!!

These are questions you need to be asking your doctor.  If you are truly worried about have a preterm baby, then the side effects of the progesterone shots or having a cerclage completely outweigh the risks of a preterm baby.  You have not even reached viability in your pregnancy yet.  I personally would do anything to keep that baby in.

I had a shortened cervix with DS1 who ended up being born 5 weeks early.  I was put on modified bed rest to prevent an earlier delivery.

You want to keep that baby in as long as possible.  With DS2, I did the progesterone shots starting at week 17 and he was born on his due date.  That was a much better experience.

As the mother of a 26 weeker, I think you're being selfish and an idiot. I would have done anything I could to prevent my baby's early birth, and you should too. Having a preemie is no joke. Babies die if they're born too early. Do you get that part? And many that survive have serious long term health problems. I'm pregnant again and am getting P17 shots to help prevent preterm labor. You should get the stitch and the shot. Do whatever your doctor recommends. Whatever side effects you're worried about pale in comparison to your baby spending months on the hospital or dying. You don't want the shot? If your baby comes early, he or she will end up with IVs, ultrasounds, and long term effects because you weren't willing to do the right thing. Your baby doesn't have a choice. You do.

I agree with the PP....you are being very selfish and naive.  I went into labor at 20 weeks due to incompentent cervix and lost my son.  This time, I have received an abdominal cerclage at 12 weeks and my cervix has grown already.  Stop thinking of yourself and think of your baby!

before I flame you, do you have a reason why you wouldn't want to get the progesterone? I'm on it right now, and honestly, the side effects are minimal. the shots don't really hurt.

I had a short cervix with my son. at 24 weeks  I was measuring a 1.4.. Unfortunately, the shots weren't offered back then and it was  too late for a cerclage.. i spent the next 10 weeks, in and out of the hospital on bedrest, sometimes in a bed where my feet were above my head to take the pressure off of my cervix. I was hooked up to a catheter and couldn't get up to pee.

My son was born at 34 weeks and spent a week in the nicu. we both were lucky.

this time around, i'm doing the shots (no cerclage) and my cervix has been stable and measuring fine.

i'm not trying to scare you, but a short cervix is not something to mess around with. if the doctor recommends shots, go with the shots.

It’s not that I’m thinking about my self only I did many research and spoke to someone that takes the p17 shot and out of everything I don’t agree with the things I found out. The person taking the shot gets bruises, welts, and rash has a hard time laying or sitting because of the shot and it’s such a new shot it is still being researched to the point where they can’t tell you your child will be ok while growing up because no one grew up yet their still babies. Obviously I want to do anything i can for my child I’m not retarded I’m just seeing if anyone else where experienced this with out taking the shot and if they used a cream or other remedies.

FFS.  You don't want bruises or welts or a rash so you're going to risk your child's life?  Newsflash - if you're lucky enough to make it to your third trimester ignoring this issue you're going to have a hard time sitting and laying down anyway.  It's part of being pregnant.

They can't tell you how taking anything while pregnant will effect your child with any certainty.  Because no one will approve double blind medical studies to be performed on pregnant women.  It's a calculated risk when you take anything, from progesterone shots to tylenol.

Please just do what the doctor suggests.  You're not talking about something that might make your pregnancy annoying, you're talking about a medical issue that has a good chance of killing your child if you don't deal with it.

Your responses didn't change my original assessment. There are very few side effects of the shot. You have talked to exactly ONE person about it. Many many people take it without any problems. Besides, we're talking about your baby's life here, which I still don't think you understand. The shot HAS been studied quite a bit. The March of Dimes has funded studies on it, and the MFM that I see participated in another. The shot works. Get it.

If the shortening progresses to the point where you need a stitch, you need to do that. If they recommend progesterone supplements, you can ask about suppositories instead of the shots. Those aren't any fun either, though, and most people hate them. You have to do them twice a day for the next 20 weeks. I'd rather get the shot.

OMG bruises and welts! Yeah those are so not worth potentially saving your baby's life. You are an idiot.

Yup, I definitely thought you were not the sharpest knife in the drawer with your op, and then your follow up post pretty much cemented it for me. Especially where you said you're "not retarded".
