Question about baby clothes

In your experiences, which brands run big/small/true to size? I just had my first shower this past week and while sorting and washing everything, I noticed that they vary a bit between brands (lots of Carter's and Gerber onesies used to make decorative onesies). I'm trying to get an idea for when I have to start stocking up (we got 20 newborn outfits, 5 3-6 m, 0 6-9 month).

Gerber seems to run really small, and shrank a lot, if I remember correctly. Carter's tend to be pretty consistent. Circo (the Target brand) seem pretty inconsistent, some are okay, some run big. Old Navy and Gap seem pretty true to size.

Carter's always held true to size for me with DD and held up really well through washes. Gerber onesies were always way too small and didn't last. When you say outfits- does that include plain onesies? I bought a lot of multi-packs of Carter's onesies, I probably have 13 onesies, 3 pairs of pants, 5 one piece sleep n' plays and one or two 'outfits' in size newborn. I also have some 0-3 months (mostly Gymboree brand), 3 months from carter's, a few 6 month pieces, and then I've picked up some 9 months that are in clearance right now for next fall/winter. You will go through a ton of newborn clothes, so you either stock up or plan on doing laundry. I haven't bought a lot of bigger stuff because I'm not sure how big LO will be, he could very well be in newborn for months, or be too big and I need to use 3 months right away. I live in Texas so I have to take climate change into my wardrobe planning.

Carters and okie dokie (my favorites) run true to size. Gerber shrink. Disney baby are long but not very wide. Then the more expensive brands like old navy, gap, h&m...... run larger imo. My son is in 2T but the gap and old navy are big on him, while the carters fit just right.

I think I have one "plain" onesie. Everything else has something sewn/printed on it. I have a couple of pairs of newborn pants (about 3) but everything else is either a onesie or a gown. So I guess outfit wasn't the best descriptor.

I went through my babies clothes and seen gerbers seemed way small about 3-6 months small.  The amount of clothing you will need will depend on how often you wash clothes.  With my first son we didnt have that much but didnt need more either. I hand washed something the moment it got dirty so i wouldnt ruin anything. Plus i breastfed which saved his clothes. Formula destroys clothes when they puke.  I just kept my new born in a onesi and a sleeper gown most of the time. Easy for me and less nonesense for him to put up with.  Less complaining too.  If it was cold he wore tights.  New born stuff is so iffy! I only had a couple items for a newborn so i wasnt at a huge loss when a few days later he was too big.  Then again my son was huge a 9 pounder with rolls we called him buddha. Anyhow i would not buy too much if your having to buy.  This time around my cousin loaded me up with bags of her babies stuff, now i am picking through pile and piles of onsies! Like 30 of them in each size trying my best to figure how often i will need to do laundry, blah blah blah. I finally selected the nice ones, took everything that had snaps on the back or was an outfit to the consignment store.  I still have piles. As a rule of thumb i would never make my newborn lay on snaps that are right on his or her spine owwa! Also i try never to put anything polyester on my child, i hate wearing it.  Nothing the has scratchy stuff and nothing like patches that will rub on their fragile skin.  Just some thoughts hope it helps.

Gerber is insanely tiny. Like, DS was 15% in weight and he was wearing Gerber sizes bigger than his age. They also shrink.

Carters runs a little slim, but were always pretty true to size for DS (who, like I said, was also pretty slim). Old Navy & Baby Gap run pretty similarly. Same with Jumping Beans (though I only have experience with JB toddler, not baby).

We got a few Granimals things at our shower (I think that's Walmart?) and they were always massive - mostly just insanely wide, and short. I don't think DS was ever able to wear those because if he fit them in length, he could fit two body widths in them, lol.

ETA: I wouldn't stock up on bigger sizes. You never know if your LO will be big/small for their age, and you might end up with a bunch of seasonal stuff that can't be worn.

DS is really tiny for his age/size so I am always paying attention to what brands run small since that is what we need for him (or I have to alter everything by hand). Gerber definitely runs really small, Carter's is pretty true to size (IME with DD who is 50th percentile). Children's Place and Osh Kosh tend to run a little slimmer (not smaller per se but their pants fit DS the best b/c the waist tends to be slimmer while the length is true to size). Walmart's Faded Glory is true to size while their Garanimals line tends to be pretty wide (but not longer or bigger anywhere else). Kohl's Jumping Beans are pretty true to size while maybe running a little smaller. Circo is all over the place IME, sometimes true to size other times big other times too small. Toys R Us/Babies R Us brand (cant remember the name) tend to run a tiny bit big. We don't wear much Old Navy or Gap so I can't help there.

I also felt that Gerber was small.  I only used Gerber NB size with DD, but they were perfect for those first couple weeks.

I thought that Carters were pretty spot on with the ht/wt sizes on the tag.  Although I will say the Carter's brand sold within Target seemed to be bigger than ones bought at the Carter's store itself.

Each baby is different, some are longer and skinnier, some are shorter and chunkier....so there isn't going to be one universal answer here.

My daughter would go through growth spurts - either up or out - and she would outgrow one of the measurements.  Seemed like she would always have clothes on that were too loose/baggy or too long.

Now that she's older, I find some stores more in line with her body type, which is tall and skinny.  Gap and Gymboree fit her best.  Children's Place tends to be smaller.

My suggestion is to keep everything - you will use it.  Some clothes that you think might be big for their size are actually going to be perfect for that 'in-between' phase when you are about to move up a new size entirely.

I'm in the same boat with Gerber. I had a package of onesies that I used the first week that he was home, and I had to put them away because they were just way too tiny. His other newborn clothes from Circo (Target brand) and Carter's stayed on him for another couple of weeks while we were in an awkward transition to the 0-3 month.

It does depend on the baby as they get older, too. DS is over 2 1/2, but Carter's 24 month pants are way too big around his waist, but are a tad too short length-wise. If I even attempt to try 2T pants, I can laugh because they'll fall straight down. But, I love Carter's and it's nothing to do with them; my son is tall and skinny.

For the first year, my favorites were:
Carter's
Just One You (the Carter's at Wal-Mart)
Circo

After that, I started shopping at Children's Place too and I find that their sizes are true and stay consistent.

Gerber was the smallest in my experience.

Carter's off brand (Just mine, Just one whatever they all are at Target, Walmart etc) ran smaller than the regular Carters brand IMO.

Carters regular was true to size.

Old Navy/Gap was true to size to a little big in my experience.

I found Gerber to run small and Carters to be freaking massive. DD's 33 months old, 30 pounds and Carters 24 month clothing hangs off of her. I wish my mom would quit shopping there. I've always found it to run very wide.

I find Gap and ON to be true to size.

I wouldn't stock up on much if you have to worry about seasonal changes. DD ended up being a peanut and was always a size behind the age recommendations. By the time she was big enough to wear the pretty, summery 3-6 month stuff everyone gave her it was way too cold. I have a ton of stuff people sent to her that she never wore because it ended up fitting in the wrong season.

Everything else is hit or miss but Gerber runs really, really small.
