how many calories per day?

Hi Everyone!

 

How many calories are you eating per day in the 1st trimester? Pre-pregnancy, I ate 1200 calories a day, which I know is pretty low. The nurse told me that I should be eating 1600-1800 calories per day. That seems like a lot to me. Thoughts?

Like you I was eating 1200 per day before getting pregnant.  I was using MyFitnessPal to loose a few pounds.  My Dr told me I should up it to at least 1600 in the first tri and between 1800 and 2000 in the 2nd and third tri.

Did you lose or maintain eating 1200 a day?  If you maintained you should be fine continuing that until next trimester when you would add a small snack (about 300 additional calories a day are all that's needed).  But if you were set to lose at 1200 you'll need to bump it up probably a couple hundred right off the bat and THEN the extra 300 in 2nd tri.

I was losing at 1200 so probably should be at around 1500 to 1600 right now I assume. Thanks!

I'm on myfitnesspal too. I'm eating 1665 now to maintain my weight.

Do what your nurse advises you to do. If you are losing some, you may want to add a snack or two. Then in the 2nd tri they'll bump you up by 300

I remember reading while pregnant with DD that an extra 200-500 calories per day (depending on your pre pregnancy weight) is what is recommended.

1200 is way too low for 99% of the adult population, even if you are trying to lose.  Someone who is 5'0", 100 lbs and does no physical activity needs 1500 while pregnant.

My ob said baby needs about an extra 300 calories. However, I can promise there will be times you will be hungry all day long. I would not worry as much about counting calories and focus on healthy choices!

Bad advice when the level she was eating before pregnancy was for weight loss and, unless she is very short and thin, was nowhere near enough calories.
