How and when did you night wean?

We had been down to one bottle in the night which I was fine with but the past two weeks hae been horrible. I am up 4 or 5 times with her.  I feel like it might be time to try night weaning. She is 9 months and 19 lbs so I feel like she should be able to go all night. How did you do it and how did you decide it was time?

Some babies are legitimately hungry once a night until about a year. I EBF, but I would not consider completely night weaning until a year.

I just weaned my 9 1/2 month old 2 weeks ago because he was waking up 5+ times per night, and our entire household was just off track.  This was also at the same time I started weaning from breastfeeding because he got 2 teeth.  The key to doing this was to totally stop feeding at night!!!  This was what my pediatrician recommended because he is 20 lbs., and she said that he doesn't need milk in the middle of the night...he was just waking to have it out of habit.  I did sleep training and followed this pattern:

http://noobmommy.com/2008/11/to-ferberize-or-not-to-ferberize.html

Day 13 min (1st wait)5 min (2nd wait)10 min (3rd wait)10 min (subsequent waits)

Day 2 – 5 min10 min12 min12 min (subsequent waits)

Day 3 – 10 min12 min15 min15 min (subsequent waits)

Day 4 – 12 min15 min17 min17 min (subsequent waits)

Day 5 – 15 min17 min20 min20 min (subsequent waits)

Day 6 – 17 min20 min25 min25 min (subsequent waits)

Day 7 – 20 min25 min30 min30 min (subsequent waits)

I didn't even have to get to night 3.  He was sleeping 11 hours by the second night.  We've had a couple of bumps along the road, but overall it was totally worth it!  I read a mom blog saying that she felt she owed it to her baby to teach him how to sleep through the night, for both his physical and mental health (and for hers too!) - I think this is 100% true.

Dump the night feedings for your whole family's sake! :)

Usually DD2 goes to bed around six pm, right after dinner and a bottle, and would sleep until about six am. We had been giving her a 10 pm bottle, but lately she seemed ticked at us for waking her (hypocrite) and would sleep through the night without it. However, she became constipated, and this has happened before when she slept through this 10 pm feeding. I think it is because she only has 3 bottles during the day, and that fourth bottle was necessary to get her hydrated enough to poop. She will drink water from a sippy cup, but not enough to make up for that bottle. So, what I am trying to say is, if you are going to wean LO, make sure he/she gets enough fluids to replace whatever they might have been getting at night. Other than, most babies don't need nighttime feedings at this age if they are getting enough during the day.

Do you mean weaning from night feedings in general? Or from having a bottle at night?

My son honestly wasn't off of a night bottle until he was two!! Things were difficult outside of that part of our lives so we let it slide. Most people do have a more difficult time with this though than with weaning from anything else! It's tough!

Eventually we realized that my son was just wanting a bottle (of water, nothing else) at night for comfort. When we took the bottle out of the crib in the morning it would be nearly full! So we just had to stop it altogether and he was fine.

I just made sure to really try and encourage DS to eat more during the day. Until he was getting more then, he didn't really cut back on eating at night. I did nothing else to encourage him to drop the night feedings, and he did so on his own around 8.5 months. He still wakes up occasionally at night but it is almost always if he didn't eat a good lunch or if he didn't finish a bottle at daycare.

If she is around 9 months, she might be needing more solids. I would assess how many solids and how much formula or breast milk she is getting and just encourage her to take a bit more throughout the day and see what happens!

Oh and totally agree with this. I actually forgot because we did this and only got to NIGHT ONE, 2nd wait (so like 5 minutes of crying total) and he started STTN. That was in combination with getting him to eat more during the day. And if he wakes up and is hungry I absolutely still feed him, but he just chooses not to bother most of the time (last night was an exception he got up twice ugh).
