Matchy Sibsets - Love or Hate? Clicky!

Bored with nesting...Plus I love the challenge of getting the Clicky to work! Initially it bothered DH, but he now says it's not as big a deal. Especially when I reminded him that my brother and I both have names that begin in Sh-. His response was that he never noticed they matched. I'm only referring to two siblings...not a Duggar-type thing. If we go with Livia ours will be Luca and Livia. Just curious how many people hate matchy sibsets.

What is your general opinion on Matchy Sibsets?

  • NMS (15.2%)
  • Hate them with an Exclamation Point (13.8%)
  • Depends on the set, but sometimes I like them (71%)
  • Total Votes: 145

I don't think Luca and Livia are matchy.  Oops!  I love Livia!!  They sound good together.

Now... Mark and Clark?  Fran and Stan?  Oy.  Those are matchy and horrible.

Depends- My aunt and mom went with Merryll, Marni, Michael, Marissa and Kirstin and sometimes it's been a headache (less so as we get older and are together less).

My niece and nephew are Liam and Eileen ... problem we had was some people called Liam Lili when he was little... and then when Eileen came along it got confusing so the nn was dropped.

I do like the matching initial (within reason)... but I would just be careful that you can say both names together without getting too tongue tied!

I like them! My best friend's name is Kayla and her younger sister is Carla. I think those are considered matchy but they go great together!

Most of the time they are NMS.

Two siblings that start with the same initial like yours doesn't bother me, but when you get to 3+ siblings with the same initial I just find it weird. It's just too contrived - like the parents didn't really choose a name based on the one they loved the best, but a name based on what its first letter was.

Also when the mom AND the dad AND the kids all start with the same initial. There was a family I went to school with who had four kids, and all of their initials were BBB. That is just too over the top for me.

Other than starting with the same letter, I also don't think Livia and Luca are matchy.

And to add...my brothers and I sort of have "themed" names.  It's totally not obvious to the vast majority of people, but my dad's all time favorite baseball player was number 7.  Like, he's crazily obsessed with this baseball player.  We (sibs and I)  all have seven letter first and middle names.  Not a coincidence.

Nice names, but I wouldn't consider those matchy. There's a line between "going together" and matchy.

I agree with Joy.

I would call Livia and Luca complimentary; great names by the way.

Very matchy names or Duggaring drive me bonkers.

I agree with Joy. Luca and Livia work well. Now if  #3 had an L name that would start to be too matchy for me.

I hate them with a passion. I don't consider most sibsets matchy-matchy until the third child (exceptions being Ethan/Evan, Jack/Jake, etc.). Siblings are not grouped together forever. They are not even grouped together for the majority of their lives (except by their own parents) so making it a 'sibset' has always bugged me.

If it's a question of absolutely loving both names, then I always say go for it. If it's wanting to be Kardashian Kool - back away!

I used to think it was sort of cheesey but DH and I have names that start with the same letter and happened to fall in love with a name for our daughter that also starts with that letter. Now, I think it's kinda cool because we will all have the same initials. My DH still says it's a bit cutesey for him but he loves the name for our daughter too much to not use it. It totally depends on the situation.

I like Luca and Livia together, some other combos not so much. I don't like the idea of all the children/parents having the same initial bc what if you have more babies than you planned on and the last one gets a crummy name just bc of the letter.

I love the names that you picked out but I really like matchy sibset names. Judging from all of the pps I seems to be a special snowflake.  :)

A general theme might be ok if it's not too obvious (like Violet, Rose and Ivy as sisters, too much). But if they all meant "strong" or something, I like that.

Rhyming names bother me. The same first letter doesn't unless the spelling is changed specifically to fit the theme (Duggars, Kardashians).

Is it Mickey Mantle? He was my dad's favorite. :)

Livia has the same starting letter and ending letter as Luca, so they are definitely matchy to me.

I think names like Maegan and Maeson are annoying, but not necessarily names that just start with the same letter...more of those that actually sound alike.  Both of my girls start with an A...it was not intentional and they don't sound alike.  It does start to bother me when there are several kids (Duggar style), or the entire family.  We have friends that the mom, dad, son and their last name all start with the same letter...J______, J______ & J________ J_______.  That bothers me too.

Allie ~ 01/26/09 ~ 7 lbs, 9 oz ~ 20.75 in. & Amelia ~ 03/16/11 ~ 8 lbs, 1 oz ~ 21 in.

This was my family growing up all J lastname

I had no plan to use all M first names, but once we chose Maeve after Moira we agreed if we had a 3rd girl she would have to have a M name too, mainly to not feel left out. FWIW, our boy choice did not start w/M

I agree with this...I have a friend who did this for her 2nd child.  Her oldest daughter has a beautiful family inspired M name.  For some reason she felt her 2nd daughter also needed an M name.  She racked her brain for 20 weeks trying to find an M name she was okay with.  I still question if she truly loves her name or if she just chose it because it begins with an M...and it was all in vain because she got unexpectedly pregnant with a third (a boy) and they gave him an A name.
