CP: eating from a spoon-how/when do you teach this??

I didn't do this right the first time around so I want to get it right this time.  When do you start to teach LO to use a spoon?  And how do you do it?

I've tried giving him his own spoon while I'm feeding him and all he does is chew on it and it's more of a distraction.

Started giving her her own spoon at 6 months when she stared solids. Stop feeding him, let him self feed w/ his hands and he'll play w/ the spoon but eventually get there. DD has been able to feed herself a bite from a pre-loaded spoon since practically the beginning.

Then they watch you and figure it out. DD has had spoons and forks all along and is pretty good but still only uses them 25-50% of the time at 17 months.

I have let DS hold a spoon since he began eating solids. He does chew on it and play around a bit but he has started to dip his spoon into his food and put it in his mouth. We also eat with him so he watches us and tries to imitate. It's a little slow going but I think he's catching on.
