Lifting heavy things?

I know for working out you can basically just continue what you were doing before pregnancy so I imagine it would be the same for lifting heavier items. However, my concern is actually the dog food lol. Because we only go to get it once a month and it's 35lbs and it's not something I lift all the time  (I don't lift anything that's 35lbs regularly) is this something I shouldn't be doing? I'm not sure what the limits are or if there are any. It's not something I thought to ask at my last Dr's appointment.

You should be fine. Your joints start to loosen and so you risk hurting yourself if you lift wrong.  I'm assuming you just have to lift in into a shopping cart from the shopping cart into your car and then into your house. You could always invest in one of those little folding carts to carry it from the car to the house. I think they cost around $20

In the materials from my doctor that I was supposed to read, it said not to lift anything over 20 lbs. during your first trimester. :-)

This particular pet store doesn't have shopping carts so it's a bit of a lift and carry - down some stairs, across the parking lot if I can't get the couple spots that are right close.
It's relevant for the dog food but I know there will be other things that I would normally just go ahead and lift that i'll have to stop myself from doing now so if I know there's a definite limit I'll be more likely not to try and cross it! lol! I just didn't know what was safe.

This is really broad and kind of misleading, honestly. Many of us have kids that weigh more than that and it's not like we can leave them to fend for themselves.  Like another poster said, the concern is for your own well being (not the fetus).  If you're not careful you can hurt yourself because your ligaments and tendons are a lot looser than normal.

Hmmm.... I think the "no lifting anything" is an old wives' tale.  I think unless you are a high risk pregnancy or going through fertility treatments, anything goes (within reason) and my fertility doctor didn't mention anything about not lifting and he gave me aout 100 other things I couldn't do or eat so I'd think that'd be on the list if it was that crucial.  Plus I just boarded a plane in CLT bound for philly and I lugged my 35+ lb suitcase into the overhead bin which is quite a feat for me at only 4'11". If that's gonna do damage then I better resign myself to bedrest now!

The day before I got my BFP, I carried a 50lb. bag of dog food. Everything is still ok.

I forgot that your joints and ligaments do loosen which could potentially cause some problems. I've had a pretty severe shoulder injury only just a couple years ago - a slight separation that didn't heal properly causing some arthritis in the joint. Every now and then it gets a bit painful still but I've noticed more recently that it's been a little more consistent. I guess it would make sense if my joints are loosening now. Might leave the dog food to the hubby just to be safe. That's the last thing I need is to be dealing with those issues all over again during pregnancy. I'll keep to the things I regularly do and let DH pick up the slack for the minor things every once in a while.

Exactly.  Unless you're otherwise high risk, you don't have to worry about lifting things you always lift anyway as long as you do it carefully.  Pregnant people haul around toddlers with no issues daily, not once like buying dog food.

I wouldn't lift it just to be extra careful. I don't know for sure that it would harm you or the baby but it is better safe than sorry. And, it is not your child or something so you do not have to lift it. I would maybe ask if an employee could help get it in the cart and make you SO get it in the house.

Ask your doctor, but if it's not something you do regularly I'm guessing they'll tell you not to do it.  I work out and do weights at the gym so I'll continue what I was doing as well as lifting my 27+lb toddler.

If its something you do regularly you will be fine. I carry, swing, piggy back my 40lb toddler all the time. When I workout I squat anywhere from 35-50 lbs. That no lifting more than 20lbs is outdated according to my OB.

I'm not allowed to lift anything heavier than a jug of milk right now.  But, my doctor should have just put me in a bubble with all the limits she set for me! I'm one of her "high risk" patients and she does not want to take any chances.  At first I thought this was great, but it starts to get hard to make it through day to day things!

I lift what feels comfortable. I normally carry two 50lb bags of feed each week from the car (not at the same time though, LOL). And when I was pregnant with my first DD I worked at a petstore, and I stocked shelves, scrubbed cages, etc. As time went on my belly got in the way of grabbing things, but it never slowed me down. Everyone there was really nice and kept telling me to take it easy, but I am not one to slow down. Now I am pregnant with my third and I still pick up my 3yo, though she weighs less then the bags of feed. I muck out my chicken coops and just keep doing what feels right. Your body will let you know when too much is too much.

Ditto this. Be smart as you lift and listen to your body. You'll be fine.
