Names you "can't use"?

Does anyone else have names that you LOVE, but can't use because of associations? Has anyone used them any way?

 For example, I've dated an Ian, Adam, and Aaron, all names that I love, but I would feel really weird using them! Or what about friends who have names that you love? One of my best friends is named Ellen, which is a name I would love to use, but would feel too weird about naming her after her without meaning to.

All the names that I love but have had to cut aren't because of bad associations, but because they sound bad with our last name.

For boys I like the names Elijah and Samuel but won't use either since DD's name is Delilah (first one because it rhymes and the second because I think it's too close to the "Samson and Delilah" reference).  Also since our last name begins with an N, DH vetoed every name that ends in a N.

I sort of did this and sort of stuck my foot in my mouth... I have an Uncle Joe (by marriage), and I told him the name we had for our son and I quickly said that it wasn't after him...which sounds sort of rude and weird...

I like the name David, but there are two guys that I sort of dated and they both turned out to be jerks. I'm not going to use it just because of the association with both of them.

I also like the name Emerson, but my cousin has a little girl named Emerson.

Ryan - Nephew's middle name 

Emmalynn - Only other granddaughter is Emily

Grace - My mom hates it for some reason (trust me when I say it is not worth the grief I would hear about it daily - she loathes this name). I think it's beautiful, but I love the name we picked even more.

Karissa - my ex first introduced me to the name 11+ years ago. His best friend used it before he ever had a chance to use it himself. It's been a lot of years but I'm still friends with the ex and his friend on FB. I just think it would be weird if I used it because of where I first came across it (its variations are also quite popular where I live anyways and that's something I struggle with...popular names).

Bryden - it's the name of my cousin's son. We see each other often so it wouldn't fly (especially since I also never heard of this name until my cousin had his son).

Marley - have loved it for years but all I can think of is the dog (associations with Bob Marley don't bother me).

DH loves Seth, but I have a terrible association with the name. Plus, my BIL (who is South African) would pronounce it 'sith'. Ugh.

I love Francesca/Frances/variations, DH has a terrible ex called Fran. So that's out.

Craig and Greg are out because of the grief we would get from my mother, she dislikes both names and has difficulty hearing/saying them properly. Not worth it.

I love the name Chantal but DH cannot pronounce it correctly. Flynn is cute but I HATED a guy I worked with that had that last name.

I work with people that have kids named Micah, Nina, and Carter so those names are out as well. It would be too confusing.

Alexis- I really would've loved to use this for a girl and call her Lexi for short, but BIL's name is Alex. Too close.

Hannah- name of DH's ex. Everyone's on good terms now, but I still think it would've been too weird.

My DH is a teacher, so any child that he ever had that was a terror was off the table!

We could not even consider any variation of Jack or Jackson (even though this is one of my favorite boys names).

We chose Owen for our baby boy despite the fat that one of DH's friends is named Owen. We liked the name so much we were able to see past that. Plus a friend is a positive association, but a terrible student is a negative association.

Andrea has always been one of my favorites, but H has a cousin named Andrea.  She also has a brother named Joseph (Joe) which is on our list but is a family name. 

H also won't use Marie for a MN because his exw had a double name with Marie in it.  Although it would be a perfect MN because both of our moms have it as a MN, he won't budge.  I don't love it and figure they both had them as filler MNs anyways.

Edit: I forgot, H won't use Bridget or Corinna because one was his trainer at work and the other his supervisor's name.  I LOVE Bridget and am hoping that enough time will pass and I'll convince him on this one.

Hazel and Ruby are very high on my list, but would never work with our last name.

I love love love - Evelyn, but my best friend has had "dibs" on it for a while. I wouldn't feel right using it.

 ETA : Hunter, Amber, Jessica (don't really love this one anyway but DH does) - bad association

There's a few that I love but we can't or wouldn't use because either a family member has that name or a friend has a child with that name.  Some are:

Carter - This was on my list for as long as I can remember, but my best friend named her son Carter.

Olivia - I love the name Olivia for a first or a middle name with the nickname Livy, but I have a cousin named this. 

Grace - I really wanted to use this as a middle name if we have a girl, but I have a cousin with this middle name.  I'm not sure if I would still use it or not...possibly, but it's also very popular for a middle name.

Paige - A friend of mine named her daughter Kinley Paige.

Claire - Ok this one is very iffy.  We really want to name our daughter Claire if we have a girl someday, but our niece's name is Alena Claire.  Since it is her middle name, I wasn't sure if we should still use it as a first name, or if her parents would be offended.  I don't think it's such a big deal since it's her middle name and we would use it as a first name, but who knows?  I debate on whether we would just name our daughter that or if I would mention it to her mom to see if she acts upset about it.

I have a very large family and my husband has a large extended family. We dont use any names that have previously been used before which narrows our name lists down dramatically.

Matthew and Peter have both been ruined by jackwagons DH has worked with.

I really like the name Nora, but my niece is named Cora, so I'm pretty sure we need to pass on that. ;)

Sophia, my absolute favorite girls name.  My cousin had a stillborn baby about 5 years ago and they named her Sophia, so I would never think of using it.

FWIW, I think this is fair game unless she goes by Claire which I'm assuming she doesn't. Our niece's middle name is Helen but she goes by her FN so I have no reservations adding Helen to our list of potential girl names.

I vote you can use it but it would be courteous of you to mention it to her mom first.

Lol! My DH and I both love certain names, but they happen to be names of family members who we are not nearly close enough to for us to name a child after. I always wondered if we could get away with something like this...
