I did some research over the last months on this subject. Due to their advertising it seems good to do, however...there are many aspects to look at. So to start they claim 80 something diseases and such can be cured with these. What they dont specify right out is that its not that many for the child it comes from! You cant cure a disease in a child with its own stem cells as they are already infected and deamed not useful! You dont know what your child will develope until too late. Where most of the healing works is in a sibling as long as the cells match well and the stems cells are pure.
Here is another kicker they encourage storage for 20 years however, one they dont know how long they are good for, two the research has shown there is only enough stem cells to help someone up to the age of ten. So anyone older would need more. Now another nice thing is that many people donate their stem cells for free and they go in a public bank aaaannndd stem cells are easily matched up to most anyone as they are concidered neutral. So your chance of recieving them if pretty good.
Storing your own only garuntees your access to them. It doesnt mean they match or are disease free or will be enough or anything. It also doesnt mean that the process is free. Its not it still costs thousands to use them. Often your better off to go to a university hospital where they are studying this and work with it daily and your chances of stem cells being used and done effectively are at their best.
I would like to donate my babies as it goes on a list and though you may not get to use your own from one site I read you do go on a list to have stem cells in the case you need them. Not sure the rules on that.. On the other hand if your family is high risk you are often a candidate for recieving the service for free you need to apply for it to recieve the grant.
Im not really supportive of the private blood banks as a result of all I have read and how they advertise the service in a dishonest manner. They make a lot of claims, which are true in certain cases for certain individuals. When they are confronted they shrug it off and say weeeeell it helps the siblings more. One woman spoke of how she had done the cord bloodbanking and her baby had a disease and she said oh good i banked here stem cells so we are okay. The doctors said absolutely not! Those are no good since those are where your baby recieved its disease from them. You cant heal a negative with a negative you make it worse. Start reading around and it becomes very clear the benefits are limited for the baby with the stem cells saved. In all honesty if you all have a history of a disease and are high risk...then the chances of baby having it is high which means its stems cells are no good for healing, you want some from the public bank that are clear.
Just some thoughts hope it helps.
