Anyone here work from home?

If so what do you do? Just wondering because I also work from home as a photographer. Winter is a slow time of year for my business, and I've been wondering lately if there is something else I might could be doing while at home to earn a bit more. It is looking like we may try private adoption in the next year or so and I'll need to really start saving towards that goal. I would obviously look for an out of the home job but we will be doing treatment and lots of monitoring appointments this spring for upcoming IUI cycles. My RE is an hour and a half away and I can't imagine any job that would be willing to let me have so much time off especially when I just started. Any ideas of something really flexible? Thanks!!

I don't work from home, but I am also wondering about legitimate work from home options (especially ones that pay decently that you don't need years of training for).

I was just curious if you were looking at domestic or foreign adoption. I was just asking because I have all sorts of knowledge and resources into the Korean Orphanage system and I'm a little bit of a Korean adoption advocate, lol. NOT that I am judging domestic adopters of course. That is all. :-)

I work at home for my company.  It seems that it is becoming an option for more and more companies as it saves quite a bit of money for them.  Look into companies that have call centers or a hotline.  Frequently, the people who work for them do not work in an actual office and actually work at home (as I do).  May not be the type of "work at home" job you were looking for, but I love it and thought I would throw it out there.

I'm currently nanny as my day job, but that's mostly to earn a bit of extra money to go on vacations and such as my husband is only stationed here another 2 months, then the next location for only 6 months, and then back here for 3 months again.  So getting a traditional out-of-home job would be rather difficult!  I'm in the process of writing a novel, but I won't make any money off that until it's (hopefully) published.  I'd love to be a novelist!

I'm a graphic designer on the side, and if you're a photographer, chances are you could branch into some other types of work - album design is lucrative, I charge around $200 to design an album, and then I print with Blurb.com which runs around another $150 for a high quality book, so the client pays around $350-400 for a really nice photo book.

Also, boudoir & maternity shoots aren't summer specific like wedding photography.  I'm doing a pin-up girl style shoot in a few weeks, and I'm paying the (amateur-trying-to-turn-professional family friend) $150 for an hour long shoot and edited photos (I'm doing the printing myself).  Others in this area charge around $450-700 for boudoir shots with makeup/hair (if you or someone you know can do it) and a book of pictures.

I work from home!  I do tech support/customer service for a small software company.  The only additional stuff I've been able to do is computer based.  I've worked for a couple of my company's clients to help with the way they use our program basically - photo editing, creating pages in Photoshop, stuff like that.  Similarly, my uncle is hosting a big fundraising event this year so I created their flyer/promotional material.  That's the kind of stuff that would be easy enough for me to do while I'm at home.

As a photographer, are there any opportunities for photo editing/graphic art?  Are you a photoshopper?  That kind of thing seems like it could potentially be a good option for you....

At this point we are mostly looking at domestic adoption mainly because I hear foreign adoption is quite a bit more expensive. If money wasn't a factor we'd really prefer foreign adoption. We are still  very much in the beginning stages of considering this though.  We just know that we have a very very low odds of conceiving with IUI and we don't think IVF is right for us so we want to start saving for adoption of some type.

A friend of mine sells 31 items to bring in extra income. She is also saving to adopt.

I don't know much about it, but you could always sell 31 or Avon which could work around your schedule.

As a former newspaper editor, we sometimes used freelance photographers for ball games or different events. Small weekly newspapers may not have a full time photographer or enough staff to cover events.

I have a side business of wedding coordination and understand the "slowness" in the winter. For OP - have you checked in with other photographrs in your area to see if they need help with editing, etc. my area has a FB group of wedding vendors that all share referrals, ask for help with editing, second shooting, etc. and sell eachother equipment. Its really nice to see "competitors" teaming up and working together.  Stick with what you do best and reach out!

Other cute ideas I have seen are team up with petstores/doggie camps, etc.  for pet shoots, mini sessions for each holiday (valentines day is coming up!) at your house and tell friends/family, military diployment/reunions, etc.

Also - a local photographer went to the courthouse on 12/12/12 and shot weddings for free and hosted the photos online, but made some $ on the prints/albums.  May want to consider for valentines day?

If you are at all tech savvy or have some graphic design skills  - monograms, wedding invitation design, T-shirt designs ...set up shop on etsy.  :)

Foreign adoption can be yes, but I had heard that Domestic was almost as expensive when you do private rather than through the government... but I don't really actually know as I haven't researched it. I'm pretty much doomed to either biological children or foster care because unless the adoption is the same price as having a biological child, I would be SOL, lol.

Well good luck either way! Like I said, I am partial to Korean babies for reasons I won't go into being both depressing and a long story and very personal, but I respect anyone who decides to adopt.

I do work from home and I work for a Healthcare Consulting Firm.  I have been with this company for 10 years and I can't drive (medical), so that's the only reason I am home.  I worked for the company for 6 years before coming home. I don't think I would have gotten hired in the beginning if I couldn't be in the office because it's not a work from home company.

I have wanted to look at other work from home companies, but most of them don't pay enough and I don't want to do customer service type stuff (call center).

I 'sort of' work from home.  I'm a software engineer and do most of my research at home, but visit my clients as a consultant. I go to the office twice per month.

Since you're a photographer, have you considered using your artistic eye for Photoshop work?  It can be done at home and if you can get in with a good consultancy, they pay isn't all that bad.

Approach baby boutiques. Some of them will do photo shoots in store or will help promote you to their customers.

I work from home and I love being able to be with my LO! I was so fortunate to be introduced to Rodan+Fields. They’re the doctors that created Proactiv Solution and now they’re doing for aging what they’ve done for acne. They’ve created a life changing skin care line and they’ve recently moved to the Direct Selling sector of the market. So now consultants like me get to make the big bucks as opposed to the big department stores! They also offer great incentives like iPads, bonuses, free trips, you name it! I work with several women who are earning 5 to 6 figures from this business and they’re ALL moms like us. It was a no brainer! This business was a perfect fit for a new mom like me because it doesn’t require parties, it doesn’t rely on a pyramid model and it was so easy to get started. All I had to do was share my story with others through social media and conversation and watch my business take off. Just thought I’d share with you guys! If you want to learn more, check out my site at www.drivenbydreams.biz.

Spam (and Necromancy).  All three of her posts are about this 'awesome work from home' opportunity.  Hmm

DH and I have been researching adoption since we got married- it's always been in the cards for us, and will probably happen at some point, regardless of the productivity of my ute.

The costs on agency websites (and stats on private) are scary. I know they are. But honestly, between the tax credit, fundraising (not everyone's cup of tea) independent grants, and agency grants (if you go the agency route) it can be quite affordable.

I'm going to just throw my plug in here for working with an agency. As an adoptee, I feel very strongly about ensuring that there is lifetime support for both the expectant mom/birth mom as well as the adoptee and their family. Even in infant adoptions, the adoptee faces a lifetime of "being different" no matter how well-adjusted they are. I strongly believe that using an agency that provides support to expectant women regardless of their decision to place or parent is essential in keeping the adoption "industry" ethical.  If these women are making a placement decision due to finances, they may not be able to financially access quality mental health and counseling services to process their grief post-placement. Working through an ethical agency helps mitigate that risk.
