Lets talk Breast Pumps!

Two different friends of mine have super expensive breast pumps but both of them SWEAR by their $20 travel pumps.

Since I am a FTM I know nothing about anything. Could someone point me in the "breast" direction ;-)

Really??? How often do they pump? If you are only going to pump once in a blue moon so you can go out for dinner or something, then a cheapie is fine. I went back to work FT at 3 months and would have jumped off a cliff if I didn't have my PISA.

The 1st step would be to contact your insurance! I went to mine's website and just emailed them to ask how much they would cover. New law went into effect 7/2012 and insurance is supposed to cover part/ALL of your breast pump & possibly accessories! Read the fine print, most won't reimburse a retail purchase, but will cover if you go through their supplier. I am also finding out that most suppliers are out of stock. So make sure to ask your insurance what to do if they are out. Can you get your pump before baby is born or after? Also make sure to ask what models are covered!

As for models, I am also a FTM so I can't help much... I've heard Medela Pump in Style and Freestyle we're awesome! If you do go the retail way, make sure to keep receipt and unopened! Try out hospital pump before committing to a $200+ purchase.

Being that it is a device that I relied on several times per day for over a year, I recommend the Ameda Purely Yours.  I would be hesitent to use a machine with less of a reputation.

I borrowed one from a friend of mine because they are so darn expensive but I dont think a portable pump will cut it if your going to use it on a daily basis.

See what your insurance will cover first, you might be surprised! But many hospitals rent them too!

Ditto the recommendation to check with your insurance company.

I had the Medela Pump In Style Advanced with DD. Never had a problem with it.

I agree with the PP's to call your insurance and see if they will cover anything. With that said, I went almost 2 years using my First Years manual breast pump, and yes, I was working, and had to pump at work twice a day, and when I was gone with the military. I never once had to give DD formula. That was 7yrs ago, but I found the exact same model on Walmart.com for $20 and will be getting it again :) Even if my insurance covers an expensive electric one (I haven't called yet) I'm still gonna get my FY manual!

this... we received our pump free through WIC... you could always rent one from a reputable place (ie hospital) if you want to try some out

I have the Medela Frestyle and lot it.  Only pumped for 3 months with DS but the price was totally worth it.  Super compact and easy to carry where ever.

I'm with you.. I plan on staying home.. and so did my friends.. only pumped for dad to feed on occasion or when it was absolutely necessary.. and I don't want to spend the $$ on the nice huge one when I'll use it maybe once a week or so....

If you plan to return to work, get a double electric pump,

If you plan to SAH, a manual pump could suffice, of if it doesn't, they sell cheaper single electric pumps that are designed to be used just a couple times a week, like the Medela Swing.

I called my insurance company and they will cover a manual pump. I was shocked what a waste.

I will be going back to work, so I will have to pump a lot. I am planning on getting the Medela PISA- all of my breastfeeding friends/family/co-workers love it.

I have an almost 5 month old and im a very glad I did not skimp on the pump! I originally bought a cheapy 70 pump online but after talking to 3 lactation consultants I bought a medela and man was it worth it. I exclusively pump and my supply is still going strong. The cheapy pumo sucked. I would have no milk left if I stuck with that one. It might seem like a lot to spend 200 bucks on a pump but in the end it pays for itself because you could be spending more on formula.
