IKEA furniture for nursery? Thoughts?

I am seriously considering a crib and mattress from IKEA.  I would also like to find a dresser (to use as a changing table), a simple bookcase, and a chair for nursing.

What do you guys think about these? My husband is handy, so I'm not worried about assembly and the safety ratings look good.  I'm wondering will a crib last through 2 or 3 kids spaced fairly close together or are they going to fall apart quickly?

I've never bought furniture from IKEA, but I don't need anything fancy, and the price is right!

Also, is a rocking or glider chair necessary?  I plan to breastfeed and want something comfortable of course.  I am looking at their upholstered arm chairs, but they don't rock or glide.  I think if I had a footstool I'd still be comfortable, but I don't know...FTM here obviously!!

A lot of people here like the Ike's furniture. I went for something else.

In terms of chair, I went for a glider I am very happy. I nursed my son for year in it. We use it everyday for story time and cuddles before naps and bedtime. I considered a arm chair but in the end I decided on a glider. I am happy with it

We're planning on doing an Ikea crib and dresser (for changing table) - the 8 drawer Hemnes dresser is very popular for this purpose (we actually have one in our bedroom and love it), so that's what we'll be going with.  We also plan to put an Ektorp armchair in the nursery, retrofitting it with a swivel/rocker base (you can google converting armchair to rocker to find info on this).  We have a lot of Ikea furniture and have always been very happy with the quality of the pieces we buy there.

I have an Ikea dresser for a change table and love it! A chair/rocker/glider is not necessary at all. Our DD slept in our room until she was sleeping through the night (about 3.5 months) so I found at the late night feedings I was most comfortable nursing in my own bed. - of course I guess that could be a problem if your spouse is a light sleeper, but mine sleeps like a rock. Other times, I found myself nursing in the living room on the sofa. It gave me a chance to listen to music or catch up on the news or sometimes even a show I had long since tivo'd.

To each thier own, I find the gliders a waste of money that I would rather put towards something else.

Ikea cribs are highly rated by Baby Bargains, and many people seem to like them. They're extremely affordable as well. I hope to make a trip down to our local Ikea soon to check them out in person and see if they will work.

We bought a 3-drawer Ikea Hemnes dresser on Craigslist and are planning to use that as a changing table in our nursery (it's a smaller room, so the 8-drawer dresser would have been too large).

Love Ikea stuff!  DDs just moved from their Gulliver cribs last month, and after almost 4 years, they are as solid as day 1.  This LO will use one of theirs.  We also have a Hemnes 8 drawer dresser and other than some issues with the bottom of a couple drawers drooping (could be fixed without much issue...we've just been lazy), it's in great shape.  Add in some Expedit bookcases and yep, we're Ikea fans. :-)

I don't think a rocker/glider is essential.  While we have an older LaZBoy rocker/recliner, I never BF in it.  I did all my BFing on a loveseat or sitting on the floor.  We do have a glider too, and while I like sitting in it, I can't remember sitting in it with a baby!

I got a recliner for DS's room. I liked it better than a glider, because so many times in those early weeks/months I'd fall asleep while BFing and it was nice that I was reclined. I feel like it's less of a chance to drop DS while I was tired and out of it.

Our entire nursery was ikea... We had a small room for the nursery before we moved so we needed furniture that was compact and easy to move. We bought the gulliver crib, a mattress, the gulliver changing table, two TROFAST storage units, a poang rocker and footstool, and two small bookshelves. We use the TROFAST units with the sliding bins for clothing. I labeled each bin with the clothing contents.
We still use the changing table and DD is 16 months. I bought a small clear diaper oranizer to keep diapers and wipes close.
The only thing I probably wouldn't buy again would be the poang rocker. The seat was too deep to easily get up from while holding a tiny baby and the arms were wood. I wound up keeping a folded blanket an the arms so DD wouldn't bonk her head while I was holding her.

I highly recommend the ikea cribs. They are sturdy and hold up well.
Oh, and you didn't ask, but the ikea Antilop high chair is great! It's cheap and easy to clean.

This! After 6 months of cleaning an expensive Graco high chair (baby food + fabric = yuck), we tossed it and got the Antilop. SO much better! So easy to clean and is much smaller and takes up much less space in the kitchen.

I really like IKEA furniture (cribs and dressers in this case).

I went there when I was pregnant and looked at chairs, they were all really deep and I had a hard time getting out of them without using my hand (which you have to do when holding a baby).  If you want a rocker or something, look at a different place for that.

We have the Hemnes 8 drawer dresser for a changing table too. It is a bit taller than a dresser made to double as a changing table though so make sure you stand next to one in store to make sure it will work.

All of our nursery and playroom furniture is Ikea. Ikea is one of the few affordable places where you can buy a Eurostyle crib. I hate hate hate cribs with headboards which, for some reason, is all the rage but didn't want to spend $500+ on a better contemporary one when I know I'm going to buying my kid a car or fire engine bed in a couple of years! I love our Gulliver crib and the mattress has been fine as well. We have the changing table, too but I find I do most changing on the floor these days since diaper changes are more like wrestling matches at this age. We also have a lot of the storage furniture from Stuva line, which comes in really cute, fun colors. I love it all. For a kid, I don't think I've seen anything that I'd really even want more-- but I'm also a huge fan of Scandanavian/Danish design so this fits in with the style of our whole house.

Were getting all Ikea furniture for our nursery

I love that the crib were getting from there converts to a toddler bed and its only $139.

The hemmes 8 drawer dresser to use as change table is great, has a ton of storage and should last a long time.

We had the Gulliver crib and used it for 20 months. It's still good as new, and my sister's 8 month old is currently using it. We did not use an IKEA mattress, though, we just used a standard crib mattress. We also had the Poang rocking chair. It's in storage right now because we recently switched to a twin bed, also from IKEA.

Honestly, we didn't use our rocking chair very often. He likes to rock when he is sick (now, at almost 2) but we rarely used it when he was a baby. I found it more comfortable to feed him in on the couch with an ottoman.

We are very concerned about the toxicity of crib paints and coatings, so we were looking for an unfinished crib and found one at Ikea as well as a dresser and they are very low-prices. We will be painting them with organic paints. We plan to buy an organic crib mattress and changing pad elsewhere. We have bought alot of Ikea furniture and other things over the years and have been pretty happy with the products.

THIS!!!!  We got a 3 drawer Hemnes dresser and with a changing pad on top it's uncomfortably high for me.  So we ended up totally rearranging our nursery and now we're going to use the expedit bookcase for changing. The dresser would have been fine for DH, but he's 5" taller than I am!

We also got our crib from Ikea but went with a natural mattress on amazon.  I love all of our Ikea pieces!

We did get a chair - it's a glider/recliner from Best Chairs Storytime Series.  OMG I adore this chair!  It fits me really well, is SUPER cushy and soft, easy to rock/glide and love the recline feature.  If LO needs to sleep upright at some point, it will be comfy to do in that chair!

We have a Gulliver crib and Hemnes 8 drawer dresser. I couldn't be more happy with them. For the chair we went to a normal furniture store and bought a leather rocker/recliner. I was a lot cheaper than the ones targeted at the baby market, much nicer leather and more comfy. As an added bonus it is just normal furniture so it will look great in the family room when we don't need it for the nursery any more.

I have an IKEA crib that a friend used for one of her twins.  They had stored it for a year prior to me getting it and it's been great.  I suppose it's now been through 2 kids and is 5 or 6 yrs old.  It's been very sturdy and  I have had no concerns about it.

We also have a 3 drawer Hemnes dresser that has been great.  We got it for free from a yardsale b/c one of the drawers was broken.  My husband was able to fix the drawer and we've been using it for over a year now and it operates like new.  I'm not sure how old it was when we got it but my guess is that it was at least a year old based on the nicks and scratches that came with it.  We used it initially for a changing table and it was big enough to accomodate the changing pad and supplies.

Initially I used an IKEA Poang chair with a footstool in the nursery for nightime feedings (LO never slept in our room).  After several months I realized that getting up from that sucker was really putting some strain on my knees b/c obviously while holding LO I had to basically squat to stand up.    I would sit in the chair you're thinking of and holding your arms in front of you (like you would a baby), see how easy it is to get out of the chair.  A footstool I think is necessary.  Nursing was and is totally uncomfortable to me if my feet aren't elevated.  As for a glider, I think it would have been nice on occasion but the size of the nursery wouldn't accomodate it and the armchair I have in the nursery now has been perfectly fine.

DD's nursery is almost all IKEA, and for number two we've got a Poang chair instead of a glider, you can get them as rockers or just as bouncy type chairs.

Our nursery includes the Sundvik crib, an IKEA mattress (I think the Vyssa Vackert but I'm not completely sure), the Spoling changing table, and a Poang chair.  Love it all.  We've only been using them for about six months, but so far no complaints... although our kiddo is a tank and so she will outgrow the changing table soon (weight limit 25 lbs).
