31 weeks and lots of contactions-Xp from March 2013 board

Hi Ladies!

I've been inactive for quite a while now, but have been keeping up with everyone. DH and I moved home from Kuwait at the end of Nov, closed on a new house at the end of Dec, and got a puppy...so life has been pretty busy.

To get to the point, this weekend I started having random painful back contractions and crazy sharp vag/lower pelvis pain. Tues morning I woke up to lots of Braxton hicks.  At about 11 they started to get pretty regular, not painful, but only a couple of min apart. I called the doc at about 2 and he said to come in. He checked me and no dilation but my cervix is soft. Did an NST and I had contractions the entire time, timing 2-3 min apart. Got sent to L&D, was given fluids and those shots to stop the cxns. It took 3 doses of the shot to get them to stop.  Doc also decided to go ahead with steroid shot for lungs.  Finally got sent home at around 9pm.

I was basically told to take it easy, and have an appointment next Wed to check on things. He called in the pill form of the Contraction pills with instructions. I haven't taken one yet, but have had a couple of episodes over the past 2 days with pretty frequent cxns.  Today I've had more, and they have been pretty consistent, even with tons of water intake and lying on my side.  I think I need to try one of the pills to stop them.

There's a history of early delivery/pre-term labor with my mom.  I was born at 32 weeks and my mom was put on bed rest at 26 weeks with my sis due to pre-term labor.  I think this is the reason my doc decided to go ahead with steroid shots.

After ALL of that, my question to you ladies is, has anyone gone through this or something similar and how did it turn out? This may be naive, but am I at a real risk of delivering soon? I just don't feel like any thing is wrong, other than cxns all the freaking time.  I don't feel like I'm about to have a baby, but then I've never had one before.

I appreciate any advice anyone has and hope everyone has a great weekend!!

I had the exact same thing at 29 weeks.  I was having BH contractions every 2-3 minutes and spent the night in L&D.  They gave me lots of IV fluids (which did nothing) and Procardia in pill form which did nothing until the 2nd or 3rd dose.  Then they sent me home with instructions to rest until my U/S.  If they haven't discussed this yet, you should request an ultrasound to measure your cervix.

My cervix measured nice and long at 5cm so the doctors just shrugged saying that they had no idea why I started contracting so much but that the contractions clearly weren't doing anything!  I lay around the house for a few days after (mostly because I was soo tired after being up all night in L&D) and when I went back the next week the contractions had stopped.

Occasionally I start getting them again and I just force myself to rest ASAP instead of last time when I had been feeling "off" for a whole week before I finally realized something might be wrong.

My advice is to take it easy until you see your doctor again and then to ask them about an internal ultrasound to measure your cervix.  They said that if the cervix measures longer then 3cm it shows that the BH you are having aren't preterm labor because they aren't doing anything.

Good luck to you and don't worry too much if you can!  You are almost at 32 weeks (after which the risk for serious complications plummets) and combined with the steroid shots your LO should be just fine!

I am in the exact same boat as you. Starting at 31 weeks I was having frequent contractions which I got the shot to stop them (only took one) and then had a series of two steroid shots for baby's lungs.

Fast forward a week later, and I ended up in L&D last night with the same problem. Contracting every minute and a half to two minutes. Gave me two shots and procardia (the pill you spoke about) to stop them. Problem is, the shots got my baby's heart racing and the Procardia gave me the worst headache, which I still have. Then I just get sent home with no special directions other than to drink lots of water. They said it isn't pre-term labor because my cervix is closed and just over 3 cm. long.

I know I can't offer you advice, but I'm also very scared and confused as to why my doctors would shrug it off as if nothing is wrong. They said I'm just feeling braxton hicks and since I'm so small i can feel everything that most women can't. On the other hand, I was told to call if I have more than 4 in an hour. Who knows...let's hope we can both cook our babies longer! :)

If it makes you feel better, my mom started contracting at 28 weeks and didn't deliver until 38 weeks!
