Hospital Stay

Just curious...but will the nurse change your baby's diapers while in the hospital or will I be responsible for changing his diapers? Also Will i have to keep up with the feedings or will the nurse come in and tell me when to feed?

If you room in with your baby you will be responsible for everything.  I'm not sure how it works if your baby is in a nursery.

DD stayed in our room, so we did the diapers. I suppose the nurses may have done some... but I honestly don't remember.

I BFed so obviously I did all the feedings.

The nurse changed my daughters FIRST diaper, dont be worried if it looks like TAR but then as long as she was in the room with me I changed her.

If you have them sleep in the nursery during the night they will do a bottle feeding otherwise they can bring the baby into you every 3 hours for you to breast feed.

I did it that way the first time, this time I plan to try and rest so I'll let them keep #2 through the night in the  nursery. It's bad enough that we're so exhausted from labor but they wake you up every 3 hours to check your vitals all night anyway so add a newborn to that and you'll NEVER sleep while your there!!

I literally couldn't walk for about 12 hours after the birth of my first (bad epidural experience) and I made hubby go home to get some real sleep since all that my room had was a tiny chair for 1 guest to sit in and no place for him to sleep. So the nurses were sweet enough to come in periodically and change DDs diapers until I could walk unassisted. Where I am, nurses come in about every 2 hours to check on you and baby and if the diaper needs to be changed, they ask if its ok to go ahead and take care of it or if mama wants to. I really don't know if it was hospital policy that they did this or if my nurses were just super sweet and helpful lol

Because I had a c/s, I couldn't get out of bed for a while. And when I could, it wasn't easy. The nurses had no problem coming in to help change diapers and hand baby to me to BF.

I did all the diapers unless they were doing something w/ baby and she just so happened to need changing, and I definitely did the feedings because I BF. The nurses charted all the diapers and feedings though, so they would check in and ask me when the last time was or remind me if it was about time to do a feeding or whatever. So they will help keep you on track. I imagine if you send baby to the nursery they would take over then, but I roomed in so not sure how that works really.

Just wanted to chime in that some hospitals (like mine) make you room in -- there is no nursery that baby could possibly go to.  OP, just something to keep in mind depending on where you are delivering.

Depends on the hospital. At my hospital, the baby didnt stay with me the entire time, so the diapers were changed in the nursery. However, when she was in my room with me, I changed her and they required me to save the diapers so that they could weigh them to keep track of the urine output.

When I had DS, I had the option of rooming with him, or sending him to the nursery. He stayed in my room most of the time, but since EXH was no help from the very beginning, there was a point that I had been up for 40 hours straight, and I needed rest. DS went to the nursery where they changed him and fed him formula (with approval from me ahead of time)

It was only for about 4 hours that he was in the nursery, and then he was with me for the rest of the time where I changed his diapers and breastfed.

You should check with your hospital policy and see what your options are ahead of time.

When my DD pooped out her meconium, my husband took her back to the nursery and pretended he didn't notice so they would do it for him. He's special :

We changed him and he stayed in the room with me the entire time. They gave me a log to write down each change and feeding and came in periodically to make sure we were doing both every two hours via the log.

Ask when you tour your hospital (or if you've already toured, you might be able to ask your OB/GYN if (s)he knows their policy.)

It's not something I'd have thought to ask with DD actually.

For my hospital, they roomed in as policy (which is what we wanted anyway) and DD never left the room.  However, nurses helped change diapers and swaddle and so forth, esp. when DH was asleep (at least *someone* got to sleep...I didn't for about 48 hours as DD was a non-stop eater/pooper/needed something.)  It was a huge blessing, esp. with that meconium diaper.  Ick.  That was a two-person cleanup crew with a hazmat suit.

same with me. They'd also remind me to bf if it had been 2+ hours.

This is going to depend on your situation, but in most cases - wherein the mother and the baby are both healthy and mom and/or dad are capable - feedings and diaper changes will fall to you.  You are the kid's parent, after all.

They may do one or two diaper changes depending on whether there's a nursery and whether your baby is in it.  And if there isn't a nursery and your baby rooms in, they'll likely put on a fresh diaper after the first bath (if you want them to give LO the first bath there).  Other than that it's all you.

As for feedings, if you decide to formula-feed they may do one or two feedings, again depending on the nursery situation, but the bulk of the feedings, whether formula or breast, will fall to you as well.  If LO is in the nursery they'll bring the baby to you for feedings.  I mean, even if there is a nursery the baby will still spend most of his/her time in the room with you.
