So...i hear that occasional wine is okay? is it really okay? i'm a big wine drinker and i sure as hell do miss it. BUT i completely stopped drinking and smoking as soon as i found out. i'm terrified to touch it. lol

if it is okayy is there a certain time in pregnancy you can drink it?

My advise is do all your research, talk to your Dr., and come to a conclusion for yourself like I did. I avoid 100% for 1st and half of 2nd trimester. With DS I did have a glass of wine with dinner or after while watching TV after a stressful day. I have lots of girl friends in Europe and they drink (might I add just wine and it isn't ALL the time....like a glass or 2 with dinner over there) They don't have as high of a rate of FAS as we do in the US..... it become a problem when you over do it, so if you have a problem with over doing it and not being able to stop after a glass then take that into consideration. That being said, you and DH have to make that choice and be OK with it.

Congrats for stopping smoking too!! I never have been a smoker and I actually avoid anyone smoking while pregnant and esp now with DS. Don't go back!!

I personally wouldn't drink at all during pregnancy.  But that is me.

And I do love my wine.

Honeslty, I'm on the "why chance it" boat.  I love a good wine or mixed drink, but I could certainly hold off if it would guarantee no problems.  I feel like you can't guarantee anything if you have it.  I also know someone who drank off and on throughout her pregnancy and her kid was fine, but I would never be willing to take that chance.  It isn't worth it to me.

My mom had an occasional glass of wine (like one a month) after the 1st tri with both her pregnancies.  My sister and I are perfectly fine.  However, I'm not going to chance it.

My husband is French and his sisters both drank wine with their pregnancies. I think they're much more lax over there about it. Their kids are perfectly healthy and wonderful.

But, if something were to go wrong (most like unrelated to a glass of wine or two), you would probably blame yourself because of those glasses of wine you had- so you just have to weigh it out. Is it worth it to you or not?

I'm pretty lax with my pregnancy, also- just because my husband's family rubs off on me, but if you have any doubt at all about anything, why do it at all?

I feel the same way, with the exception of a sip to taste.  If everyone is bragging about a wine or beer, how it's great, blah blah blah, I taste it.  My mom gives me a dirty look but I feel like a SIP or two is different from a glass... Plus, it's not everyday.  So I'm in the none for me but a taste is ok camp.

I also drink tea every morning but have cut out soda.

My MIL was prescribed a glass of wine daily in her 3rd tri with her 3rd child. She had hormone problems which weren't confirmed until she had SEVEN miscarriages (she managed to carry two children to term in between all of those). She was very stressed out, so the doctor told her to have a glass to relax every night. Baby turned out fine.

In addition to it lessening anxiety, some doctors will actually recommend a glass of red wine in the 2nd or 3rd tri to help calm an irritable uterus and help stave of pre-term labor.

I think anything in first tri is too chancy, but later on in pregnancy, a small amount can have benefits for some women who suffer from anxiety or irritable ute. Obviously we're talking about the occassional glass, not consistent drinking here. And I would say only when the benefits outweighs the risk, so not like a "just because i want one" glass. Research it and come to your own conclusions.

And congrats on quitting smoking!! It's hard at first, but it really does get better!!

When i was pregnant with my son. My doctor told me to have a glass of wine when i was in the 3rd trimester b/c it would relax my cervix. I was on bedrest, and she wanted to be calm. My son was perfectly fine, however i wouldnt in the 1st.tri

When my mom was pregnant with me, she was told by her doctor to drink a glass of wine every night when she was on bed rest.  I might have some wine late in my pregnancy, but I have no plan to have any during the first or second tri.

I'm in the camp that says most things are ok in moderation.  I mean, if a couple of glasses of wine messed everyone up, France and Italy would be quite different to visit.  Same for sushi and Japan.

With that said, I've abstained from both, so far.

I had half a shot glass over an hour period of Baileys on Christmas Eve when I was pg with Aidan. I know it wasn't the Bailey's that cause my cord to fail, but that still makes me feel guilty. That's why I will never drink again during my pregnancies.

I wouldn't in 1st tri, but plenty of European women drink wine while pregnant, and Japanese women don't stop eating sushi just because they're pregnant, so I'm pretty unlikely to completely eliminate any food, drink or activity just because of pregnancy.

I believe that a glass here and there us ok, my OB agrees. I also believe though that if you will feel guilty after, then why drink it? The stress of the guilt may not be worth it at all.

I'm also in the camp of it not bring worth the risk. Interestingly, I asked a German friend of mine and she said no way did she drink during pregnancy and she said no one she knows did while pregnant. Additionally, she said doctors there advise against it. So maybe it is just parts of Europe where this is standard?

Personally, I'm in the "It's never okay while pregnant" camp.  If something, God forbid, ever happened to my babies/went wrong, I would never stop blaming myself.  I like my occasional glass of wine (never been a big drinker), but it's not worth the risk to me.

I knew something was up (aka, I was pregnant) when wine tasted bad to me earlier this week. So I'm not tempted at all when it tastes like vinegar!

Last pregnancy, in the  late second and third trimester, I had a half a glass of wine with Sunday dinner. I looked forward to it and enjoyed it.

I did not drink at all during my first trimester. Now that I'm further along, I occasionally have wine. I would say I have had a glass of wine maybe 4 times total, and a sip of my husband's drinks here and there. Some people say to avoid it altogether, and there's no good documentation of what amount (if any) is "safe" for baby.

I live in the UK and it's not common here to drink at all during pregnancy. I think the stereotype concerns the French, but I can't confirm if it's true.

I'm normally a massive wine drinker, but there is no way I'd have any when pregnant.

I'm in the definitely not while pregnant camp.

Knowing the toxicity of alcohol on an adult brain, I wouldn't ever consider passing it through to my child, no matter how 'good' it might make me feel at the time.

As for it being a way to relax and calm anxiety, there are much better methods that are healthier for your baby.
