How much is safe?

My Dr gave me a list of medications I can safely take to help me sleep at night. (Benadryl, Unisom, Tylenol PM and Melatonin) The one that I feel safest using is Melatonin. Of course it is on the list from the Dr, but the bottle says it is not recommended. I called my Dr and they said it is safe but wouldnt/couldnt give me a dosage. She said if it is safe, then the dosage doesnt matter. This doesnt make sense to me. Tylenol is safe, but there are limits, ya know?

My doc also OKs Unisom. I took it for much of the second half of my last pregnancy (including the night I went into labor, before the contractions started!) and just started taking it again now. It is supposed to help with nausea as well. My doc firmly feels it is OK so I went with it. It helped with the sleep, not sure it helped a lot with my nausea.

There has actually been a lot of bad stuff out about melatonin recently. It would be the last thing I would take. The other meds have dosages on the boxes.

Melatonin is typically 3-6mg about 20-30 mins before bed.

Seriously. Please google melatonin use in pregnancy. Most sources say not to use it.

I googled...I got a bunch of reasons it was safe and a bunch of reasons it wasnt. As per usual with Dr. Google. But its not something Im willing to risk at this point. I gave up smoking and the occasional drinking for this little girl. I can give up some sleep too! When my body is tired enough it will rest...thanks everyone!

Did you try Tylenol pm? Idk why it would not be considered safe, it's Tylenol and Benadryl. But, it may not work for you. It just really relaxes me, doesn't exactly put me to sleep. If that makes sense.

The tylenol PM might be worth a shot - the tylenol night help with the RLS.

I had really had insomnia for about 3 weeks. Try Bach Rescue Remedy. I use the liquid form, just put a few drops on your tongue. Its safe for use in pregnancy. And I got a sleep CD that plays the sound of waves crashing at the beach. between those two I'm asleep before the first 10 minute track on the CD is over.

I took tylenol pm for a few weeks, and when I called my Dr office to see if it was safe to take it WITH the sudafed for my cold, the nurse insisted that it was NOT safe and could harm my baby. Regardless of the fact that she found my statement from 2 weeks prior about taking it and no one said a word then! It did work for me, but they scared to daylights outta me! So I figured that Melatonin was a vitamin, so it has to be safe, right? WRONG!

That's really strange. All Tylenol PM is is acetaminophen and diphenhydramine; diphenhydramine is the generic for Benadryl and is also the active ingredient in some forms of Unisom. Both acetaminophen and diphenhydramine are safe during pregnancy. Unless you were using the multiplesymptom sudafed, which could double the acetaminophen dosage, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to take the Benadryl.

I take plain Benadryl occasionally, but I buy the generic diphenhydramine , because its less than half the cost of the brand name.

Melatonin is really only unsafe if you're taking it in higher than recommended doses or for extended periods of time. If you're talking about one or two nights a week, melatonin is fine. I hear you on the insomnia, though. I've been dealing with it quite a bit lately, too.

This. It's the least regulated. The others have been studied up the butt by the FDA for safety and efficacy. Herbal type remedies are mainly thrown onto the market and aren't investigated by the FDA until there are enough problems reported to warrant and investigation.

I'd be leery of melatonin because there is no standardized dosage. Then again, I'm taking Ambien (prescribed by my OB, and backed up by both the MFM specialist and the psychiatrist).

I'd talk to you OB or midwife, not the nurse. I am a nurse and I will tell you I don't profess to know everything about every drug. I call the pharmacist or consult OB all the time in my job if I have questions. Your advice from the nurse doesn't make sense. I've given Benadryl and Tylenol ALL THE TIME to pregnant patients with the go ahead from the doctor and the pharmacist.

I took one Benadryl one night and slept through the night. If I decide I need it again, I may take a half of one, it was so effective.

1. Melatonin is NOT a vitamin.

2. Even if it were, many vitamins have a therapeutic margin, beyond which they can be toxic, as in the case of vitamin A.

My doctor said Melatonin is NOT ok!! She did say that Tylenol PM is... and it has been my best friend!! :)  I've never had sleep issues before now, but I'm happy to know there's something that is ok, and helps!! GL!
