Shouldn't I be hugely happy and a bit scared, not the other way around?

I'm about 5 weeks along and have known for a week now. I am, of course, so happy but my overwhelming feelings are worry and fear. My husband got upset the other day because he said I'd had about 5 minutes of excitement and 5 days of doom and gloom. It just seems like normal expecting mommies have enough to worry about and I have even more (I know we all have our struggles, of course) - I'm 38, have type 2 diabetes, already have a pregnancy-sized belly, my husband is unemployed and, while he's wonderful, he suffers from depression and he's overweight, too...I'm scared of all the physical problems (even the routine ones) and terrified of labour and don't know how I'll cope with such a big change or how we'll live on my mat leave salary alone. I know stress is terrible for the baby, but I was already a world-class worrier before I got PG - I don't want to spend the next 9 months fretting and I want to enjoy our wonderful news. But I seem to spend more time crying than I do being excited. Am I a terrible person?

Being scared/nervous is part of it.  You are NOT a terrible person.  I'm PG with my 2nd, and I'm pretty terrified, even though I know what to expect.  Keep your head up dear, it'll be okay.  And if not - that's what we're here for.  :)

I had almost the same issue. I am T2 Diabetic 10 weeks pregnant and I cant stop worrying about my baby being ok. When we first found out I was extremely happy and that lasted for like a day! After that I was even regretting getting pregnant which is so stupid because I know I want this baby so bad!! My suggestion to you although is easier said than done is to enjoy it and dont worry about the financial issues you have it will all work out in the end I am sure, just pray about it! Good luck and congrats!!!

I am trying to not worry about all the unknowns, but that's WAY easier said than done.  This is my second, so I have an idea of what to expect, but we have different obstacles this time around.  I'm trying to adopt more of the attitude that my DH's family has (not my DH, he's the worrying type) - no matter what, it'll work out in the end.  They have such blind faith that it terrifies me whenever they do something new.  But somehow, against all the odds, it seems to work out for them.

Can't remember how anything works on this stupid siggy! Everything is different. I feel old. BabyFruit Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

My husband has been showing for of the joy than I have been too.  I've been very cautious to tell my friends, while he's been using every excuse in the book to tell his friends.  I am just more worried than he is that something might go wrong, I think it is very normal to worry, but try to enjoy it too.

I have a slew of medical issues that I have to contend with while PG, too (already been referred to MFM, a bunch of other specialists on my speed dial, etc). The way I'm coping is by just looking one step ahead. When is my next appointment? Who is it with? Do I need to bring anything with me? Etc.

If I let myself, I'd start to worry if/where my child will go to college, or if/when will they get married, etc.

When I was PG with my 1st, my husband didnt have a job either, he had been laid off and I started to have panic attacks about how we were going to pay for the birth, maternity leave, etc. What helped me get through it was knowing that I had to get it together and be the strong woman I know I am (and I bet YOU ARE TOO) if not for me than for my baby and husband. In the end everything turned out fine! If you have to ask for help DO IT, there is no shame. It might help if you let some of your support system in on your secret, parents? siblings? etc. My parents helped find little jobs my husband could do to bring in a little extra money. I agree with PP, just take it one day at a time, what do i need to do today/right now. Dont go crazy buying stuff right away hopefully you will be able to get some of that from a shower and the hospital sends you home with sooo much stuff! If you ask some hospitals even have a care basket they can send home with you if you dont have those kinds of things. Anyway it really is a wonderful time in your life have faith in god, yourself and those you love and everything will work out!

Thanks, ladies! I'm feeling a bit better now, although still staying up at night worrying somewhat. Glad I'm not alone, thank  you for your support.
