Mood swings, depression

I have dealt with depression on and off since I was a teenager.  I was taking an antidepressant until I found out I was pregnant, then stopped taking it with my doctor's blessing, since I was doing so well.  During my first trimester, I experienced mood swings as I expected, but felt like they were probably pretty typical.  They have continue into the second trimester, and are getting worse instead of better.  Despite being very excited about the baby, I feel angry and irritable and am easily 'set off'.  I'm having a hard time discerning between what I am genuinely upset about and what is a minor irritation exacerbated by my hormones.  I have always had really terrible PMS and I feel like that now.  I am going for my regular monthly check up on Friday and will definitely talk to my MW about it.  In the meantime, has anyone else dealt with this?  Do you have any suggestions for feeling better in the meantime?

 Thank you!

Yes...I deal with this every single day, and it sucks!  I'm still on 25 mg Fluoxetine (generic Prozac) down from 60 mg pre-pregnancy.  My only advice is kind of cheesy, and hard for me to follow, but I try to use the mantra "Don't let your mood dictate how you treat others."  And remember that the irritability will pass soon!!  :)

Talk to your psychiatrist, if you have one. Your psychiatrist can work with your MW to figure out what med is safe for you to take (as PP said, Prozac is a good one).

I too have been dealing with this. My first trimester I was a B!*%#. Straight up! It has calmed down a bit but it seems to be rearing its ugly head. I have tried to step away from situations and make sure my blood sugar doesn't get too low (that doesn't help either). It doesn't always work. I wish I had some insight on how to make it better. In the past I have tried rx drugs and counseling. The drugs helped but the counseling did not. Being that LO is on the way the drugs are no longer an option. It's a bummer (no pun intended). If you find some out, please let me know.

I also have some major mood swings and have dealt with depression for a long time. As soon as I found out I was pregnant I quit taking my lexapro and xananx. My first trimester was tough which I thought it was just hormones but then it cotinued to get worse. I spoke with my OB and he didn't seem concered at all putting me back on the lexapro he told me it was my decision but that he had many pregnant patients who take it, even his wife took it during both of her pregnancies and he had never seen it cause a problem. I've been on a small dosage again for a few weeks and though I have my moments I can get out of bed and function every day again. I'm starting to feel much better. There are lots of meds out there like lexapro that seem to be pretty safe while pregnant. Do you research and talk to your doc! Good Luck!
