how many ultrasounds

I am only 8 weeks pregnant and am trying to figure out which Dr. I want to use.  My sister is going to one out of town and has gotten an ultrasound done every appt.  My sister in law stayed in town and only had an ultrasound done 3 times her entire pregnancy.  Just curious what was the norm.  I figured you lovely ladies would be able to help me out!

I am way above the norm, but I have pregnancy complications. The typical is 2-3, one early for dating purposes, an anatomy scan and every so often a third in late pregnancy if there's a concern on size or position. Some people also have an optional NT Scan done with a specialist.

For me, I received one at every appointment up until the 20 week mark, so there were 4 in total.  I would have only had 3, but I spotted early, so I got an extra one.  I am 32 weeks now and I have not had one since.

"Normal" varies.

Some doctors do a dating ultrasound in the first appointment around 6-8 weeks.

The NT scan around 13 weeks includes another ultrasound (my doctor used this as the dating ultrasound).

And the anatomy scan at 20 weeks.

Some doctors may do a quick ultrasound around 35-36 weeks to check position, but it's not common.

If not for some growth concerns, I would have only had 2 ultrasounds this time around (NT and anatomy). My first pregnancy only had 2 (dating & anatomy). My second pregnancy had 3 (dating, anatomy, and quick peek for position), but I had to request the anatomy scan and was sent to another doctor.

Very normal pregnancy here- Ultrasound at 7 weeks to confirm there was a heartbeat/dating, one at 10 weeks after a random day of spotting, NT scan around 12 weeks, 20 week ultrasound, and a growth scan at 36 weeks.

I only had two with my first LO. Was only scheded for one a/s this time around, but require another due to positioning. Not all insurance companies cover all scans that are done just as a routine.

I wouldn't base my choice of OB on the number of ultrasounds that they do. Each OB will also perform more or fewer u/s depending on any complications you have.

This pregnancy I had u/s at 6 and 8 weeks to date the pregnancy, another at 14 weeks because I was bleeding and the anatomy scan at 20 weeks.

With DS I had an nt scan at 14 weeks, anatomy scan at 20 weeks and a growth u/s at 36 weeks because my fundal height was measuring behind.

The norm here is one u/s at the first appointment to date the pregnancy and one anatomy scan around 20 weeks.

Unless you are high risk, you don't need many. They'll do a dating ultrasound if you don't have regular cycles or don't know when you ovulated. Then they'll do an anatomy sca. At 18 to 20 weeks.

An OB isn't better because he or she runs unnecessary tests, FYI. I wouldn't pick one based on how many ultrasounds they do.

I just wanted to ask you why you would base your choice on Dr. by how many US's they allow you to have? Maybe check their reviews and how they run their practice before you choose.

My Dr. does 2 us. one to date and check heartbeat, and the second for Anatomy scan. I will have to have a third bc my son did not want to show his heart and they need to check the chambers and valves and all that good stuff!

Good luck to you.

I had one at 7 weeks for dating - one at 13 weeks because I go to a group and saw a new doc and he wanted to take a look and then my a/s at 19 weeks.

I have complained about infrequent and not very much movement (I have an anterior placenta) and they said if that doesn't change they will do one at my next appt (to ease my mind) which will put me at about 31 weeks.

I think you need to pick your OB based on how they make you feel (in regards to comfort, and understanding your needs and wants) not about ultrasounds.

Invest in a doppler if you want to keep tabs on baby at home (I did) and it has gotten me through when I couldn't feel her or when she is having a quiet day.

3 sounds reasonable - be aware that if there are complications you can have as many as the doctor deems necessary.  My insurance company told me they would only pay for one U/S, but I ended up having 7 or 8.  They paid for them because the doctor ordered them.

I think the doctor bases the number of ultrasounds on the specific person...or at least they should.  High risk pregnancies tend to get more.  My doctor only does 1 ultrasound the entire time (at 20 weeks for the a/s).  With my last pregnancy, I had 2 though b/c at the 20 weeks a/s, they were unable to get a really good picture of all heart chambers.

I would ask some different questions before you choose a doctor though, not just base it on how many ultrasounds they perform....like, how do they both like the doctors, where do they deliver, location of the office to you (at the end you start going every week!!)  good luck

My friend goes to a high risk doctor and got an u/s every month.

I got one at 9 weeks (dating and confirmation), 13 weeks (NT scan), 20 weeks (anatomy), 33 weeks (growth). Those are the ones my practice routinely does for everyone. I also have another scheduled at 37 weeks to check growth.

I'm 37 weeks and have only had one, and that was when we found out what the baby's gender was.  I was told that they wouldn't do one unless we wanted to spend the extra money on them or if there was a reason for them to think something may be wrong.  While it's exciting to get them, it's also saved lots of money not doing it. :)

If there isn't a medical reason for all those ultrasounds there is a good possiblily that your insurance won't cover ten anyway. My sister went to a doctor that started ordering extra ultrasounds because she was little, insurance didn't pay for the extras and she was out a lot of money. She found out that doctor did that a lot, for extra money to te practice. See what your insurance covers and if they need to do more double check that it is covered. One to three ultrasounds is usually the norm.

Really you want around two ultrasounds. One in the beginning to date the pregnancy and one for the 20 week anatomy scan. If your pregnancy is healthy then this us all you should need. You might get one at 12 weeks if you opt for the nuchal translucency screening and some doctors do one at the end to check size and position.

I have had around 7 but that is because LO has dilated kidneys and it has to be monitored. With my first I had 4.

It's pretty silly to base your decision on such an important care provider based on u/s. There are far more important qualities to consider.

Thanks for all your insight!!!  This has helped a lot.  Of course I am basing my choice on more than just the ultrasounds.  I just want to make sure that we do everything in our power to make sure everything is healthy and happy with our little blessing!  I wasn't sure if it was normal to get them everytime.  The Dr. my sister is going to, it sounds like he does this with every patient.  Just wasn't sure if that was normal and that is what I should be expecting.

My doctor just does one around 20 weeks to check anatomy...but I have had three because they couldn't find the heartbeat at 12 weeks and then I am measuring two weeks behind so I had one last week at 30 weeks to check her growtha nd fluid levels.  So mine do one unless there is a medical reason to do more.....

I think it really depends on what happens during your pregnancy. When I was pregnant with my daughter I was young and very low risk and I had a dating ultrasound, the NT scan (my family has a history of heart disease), and the anatomy scan at 20 weeks. This time around I had a dating ultrasound (to make sure there weren't multiples) at around 8 weeks and then had my anatomy scan at 29 weeks (it was late because I switched practices). At the anatomy scan I just found out that my baby has a single umbilical artery so now I will be monitored with regular ultrasounds to make sure that the baby is growing appropriately.

I've had a normal, healthy, pregnancy. So I had one at 8 weeks and then one at 20 weeks. And I won't have anymore.. Unless you have complications, normally you don't have many.
