Could it be a chemical pregnancy?

My period was about a week late so I took a CBE digital pregnancy test. It came back positive. I wanted to be sure so I went back to the store immediately and bought and old fashioned line test. It was also positive... faint but positive. Two days later at work I started bleeding very lightly. I was worried but not freaking out. I would call my doctor in the morning. I work second shift, so they were closed. I went home went to bed and about 4 am I woke up with the WORST cramping in my life. I almost had to crawl to the bathroom because I couldn't stand up straight. I was bleeding super heavy and was crying from the pain. My usual periods are super light for 3 days with little to no cramping. I laid on the couch til about 4 pm when my aunt took me too the emergency room. They did a urine test and a blood test 48 HOURS AFTER I FIRST STARTED BLEEDING. She said both tests were negative and I was never pregnant? It was probably just a bad period from stress! Is this right? Or could I have had a chemical pregnancy?

If you had a positive pregnancy test (especially from two different brands of tests), then yes, it is possible it was a chemical pregnancy.  I'm sorry.

So sorry for your experience.  If you had positive HPT's then bled, it  was likely it was a chemical pregnancy, unless you read the HPTs outside of the recommended time frame.  I had similar bleeding/cramping with my c/p, which occurred just 4 days after the +HPT.  Again, I am sorry for your loss.

It sounds like a chemical pregnancy. I had a nurse at my doc's office say the same thing to me. I'm so sorry.
TTC since August 2011, Me = 39, DH = 37. CD 3 bloodwork: Normal, HSG 3/29/12: tubes clear, DH's SA 3/29/12: Everything normal. Unexplained IF. Tried Clomid for 3 cycles. All BFNs.BFP 1/6/13. Chemical pregnancy.

It was the emergency room doctor who told me I was never pregnant. I guess I should have specified better. :)

Thank you all. I am sad because my DH and I have been TTC, but I am not devastated because it was almost like it was over before I could even process it, you know? I'm am just going to try to keep things positive and try again. I'm tired of crying! :)

I'm sorry but it sounds like you had a chemical pregnancy. Have you tried taking a HPT again at home? Maybe the tests you took at home were more sensitive than the ones they used at the ER (happened to me, Dr said it was a hormonal imbalance... Didn't know that could cause positive pregnancy tests ;) but that "hormonal imbalance" will be 2 in March and is sitting right next to me). Who told you in the hospital that stress can cause a +HPT? A doctor? I'm no OB/GYN but that doesn't sound correct! Again, so sorry for your loss!

Started TTC 7/12 BFP on 7/27/12. Suspected Miscarriage on 8/14/12 @ 6w1d. Betas checked and increasing every other day. EP found & removed from right tube on 9/7/12 @ 9w4d.

Thank you, everyone. I tried talking to one of my close coworkers about it and she acted like it wasn't even possible to miscarriage so early... Oh Well. We will just keep trying!

This happened to me with my first CP...my doc tol me I could have never been pregnant. I had positive tests from different brands...both line and digital. Needless to say i switched docs. I was even turning a digital positive after the bleeding started. It was devastating!! you most likely were pregnant and had a CP. I'm so sorry for your loss. Hang in there!

It was the emergency room doctor who told me I was never pregnant. I guess I should have specified better. :)

I'm so sorry for your loss. I went through exactly the same thing just last week, and it's very common unfortunately. 

P.S.  The ER doctor is an idiot.  He or she probably thought they were 'helping' you by saying that, hoping that you wouldn't have to grieve.  Not everybody does, and even if you were going to -- it's your right to know the truth about what happened.

TTC since October 2011.
DX with Non-IR PCOS in October 2012.
Missing RIGHT tube due to a prior surgery to remove cyst-zilla (40 lbs!) at age 12.
HSG showed tube was blocked - cleared by dye. DON'T DO CLOMID WITHOUT AN HSG!
Cycle #8 with 50mg Clomid & TI = BFN
Cycle #9 with 50mg Clomid & TI = No response.
Cycle #10 with Clomid 100mg + Ovidrel shot = BFN
Cycle #11 is a break cycle. Cycle #12 is a break cycle. (The break so nice, she did it twice!)

Thank you. I'm trying to stay positive, I don't want it to get me down for too long. I knew something was wrong so I started researching and chemical pregnancy it what popped up, the first thing I thought was "Oh, that poor baby!" I don't want to cry about it forever. I know I probably will from time to time, but it's probably best not to dwell on it. Thank you for all your words of encouragement, everyone!

Nov&Dec-Provera because of no period after 35+ days
First RE appt 1/10/2013
Tests: TSH (normal), Prolactin (normal), SA (very slightly abnormal- RE not concerned)
Hysteroscopy (normal) and PCOS labs (negative/normal) 1/15/2013
2/1/13- HPT BFP but Beta Hcg was negative
4/4/13: Started Femara 5mg + Trigger + IUI#1= BFN
5/9/13- start Femara 7.5mg + Trigger + IUI#2= ???

Oh I'm so sorry to hear about this :-(  My pet peeve is hearing about docs who tell you that you were "never pregnant".  Like you don't know your own body??  FX that you feel better soon.....



TTC #1 since 8/2012

Chronic Pelvic Pain Condition began 10/2012, so TTC kind of on hold

Told it was "in my head" or that "nothing is really wrong" by several doctors until....

DX 4/2013: labral tear in left hip

My ball joint is pushing out on the ilio psoas tendon causing all the nerves in my pelvic floor and also deep inside to be inflamed.

Hip Injection: 4/10/2013......no relief

Surgery consult: 5/15/2013

Surgery Scheduled for 5/31/2013!!!

Ready to put this shiit behind me and move on!!!!

The exact same thing happened to me. Got positives on a couple different tests. Started bleeding, by the time I got into the doctor it was a day or two later and they told me I just got false positives and was having a bad period. I know better than that.

I am so sorry for your loss. That is almost exactly what what happened to me. I turned a digi positive a few days after a bad accident in 06. When i went to confirm the test was negative and I started bleeding later that day. The doctor told me I was never pregnant and my hormones were messed up due to the stress of the accident. I was only 22 and believed him. I didn't realize he was wrong until I started TTC my DS and actually learned how that worked. You would think that doctors would get better sex ed than we did in HS.
