Bottle Refusal

My  three month old  is both bottle and breastfed, and has been since he was about a week old.  I always nurse first and then offer the bottle.  Over the past few days, he has refused the bottle to the point where he is kicking and crying.  The only way he will take the bottle is if it is offered to him RIGHT after I nurse.  If I do so much as get up to get the bottle, forget it.  It is almost as though I have to sneak it in his mouth while his eyes are closed.

This is only a big deal because I am headed back  to work soon and I will be away from my LO for about 7 hours a day.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!  We have tried different brands of bottles and moving up to the next flow level in the nipple.

Have you tried having someone else give the bottle?

I have.  Both my husband and a good friend.  I even stayed out of the room while it was going on...he is just being very particular all of a sudden.

Chances are that he will be fine and take a bottle when you are away. If not, some babies reverse cycle. They don't eat the whole time your gone, as if they were STTN but during the day instead. Then, they nurse a ton when you get home and during the night. It's not ideal as far as working and sleep deprivation, but it gets them the nutrients they need.

jst curious why offer a bottle after nursing? try the bottle in place of a nursing session and pump. you can pump either right before or after a bottle.

Long story..basically I have a medical condition that doesn't allow me to produce enough  milk for him so I was always told to nurse him first and then offer the bottle so that he doesn't  get an aversion to the breast.  Instead, I think he has the opposite!

I've tried to just give him the bottle alone, but he won't take it.  In the past I've never had a problem.  I just got back from the Dr. and he said it seems to be a behavioral thing.  Hopefully I'm not in for it with this little guy!! :-)

If he is nursing first, maybe he is full by the time you get to the bottle? With that said, my first son took the bottle from me no problem. My second son (now 12 weeks) screams his head off and just wants to nurse... he'll only take the bottle if I'm not in the house.
