XP: Coffee...smaller babies, longer pregnancy!?

Last night on the evening news they did a report on their "Health" segment about drinking coffee during pregnancy could result in smaller babies and a longer pregnancy. I decided to listen to see what was to be said about this. Basically to shorten up the segment, this is what was said in a nutshell.

Women who drink coffee during pregnancy could have a smaller baby (no specification was made on how much smaller)  and for every 100mg of coffee consumed will extend your pregnancy by 8 hours.

I am guessing with how much caffeinated coffee I have consumed during this pregnancy, I could be pregnant though out the rest of the year!! So much for the July due date Crying

Any moms that drank coffee in any previous pregnancies find this true, smaller baby or an over due baby?

Absolutely not! I drank coffee 1-2 cups everyday while pregnant with my DS and he was 7lbs 3oz born at 37 weeks bc of low fluid related to blood pressure issues. If I had had another 3 weeks he would have been a big monster! Thats silly, I'm guessing it applies to extreme cases-where women are drinking 10 cups of coffee and 5 sodas a day

I didn't take this news segment too seriously. I drank soda (coke or pepsi) with both of my previous pregnancies (2- 20oz bottles a day, no coffee). DS-1 was 7.14 @ 38wks and DS-2 was 6.5 @ 37 wks.

I was just curious if there was any truth to this for some moms. If my doctor would let me, I would probably drink a lot more coffee than I do.

Bwahahahaha! I drank at least a cup, sometimes 2 everyday and DD was born at exactly 39 weeks at 8 lbs, 3oz. I had no complications and went into labor on my own. I'd consider that article junk.

ETA: 1-2 cups was my 'pregnancy' allowance. Prior to my BFP, I was a 4-8 cup a day drinker.

That cant be true. Between my coffee intake and coke intake I would still be pregnant with my 4 year old (who was born on his due date). I wouldent let it wory you.

I drank up to 200 mg all through my pregnancy with DD. She came a week early, and in a four hour labor. Fast and furious. I think its bunk, at least in my case.

DD was 5 lbs. 8 oz, but her father was a smaller baby (we are smaller people) and I was a premie part of a set of twins born at 29 weeks.

I don't buy it. Enjoy your coffee. You could still go early or on your due date. Its all just estimates. Don't worry so much.

I think if you don't consume more than the 200 mg a day, you are fine.

I just read the actual article.   It sounds like it's not 8 hours (coffee) or 5 hours (other caffeine sources) per 100 mg/day,  but just in certain weeks.  So... if you drank 300 mg/day during week 17,   you would deliver at 41 weeks (3x8 hours x 7 days).

It's not a clearly written study, and they used a ton of stats that I don't quite understand.  And while the journal is well read, it's not Nature Medicine or Science.

Pregnant women self-reported their caffeine intake & sources of caffeine at different times throughout pregnancy.   What was interesting, is that there also seems to be an age & education effect too.  The older you are or the higher degree you have, the more caffeine you consume.

The article:  If you click on "provisional pdf" towards the bottom of the page you can read the entire study.

I have continued to drink coffee in all my pregnancies.

1st: 41.5 weeks 8lb 4oz

2nd: 37 weeks 6 lb 13oz

3rd: 39.5 weeks 6lb 11oz

There is MAYBE a chance I've let myself drink a little more coffee with each pregnancy (I am less strict about everything each time) so MAYBE my pattern would support the birthweight argument but not the length of pregnancy thing. Mine were all spontaneous labors when they happened...

I would love to see the "science" behind this report.  Super dumb and just one more thing to terrify pregnant women.

Umm, you can read the article yourself.    I linked it above.

It's not dumb, and the only people trying to terrify pregnant women are the reporters who didn't read the article & didn't understand it & are trying to sensationalize it.

Thank You,ladies for your replies!! It seems like there are a lot of articles about what pregnant women should, shouldn't do, eat, don't eat, and so on. Each and every person is different and so are pregnancies.

Thank You again ladies for your replies and thoughts, and for some putting in additional information (articles) :)

If I could get this one to stay in until 42 weeks I would drink a crapton of coffee a day. But babies come when they are ready. I hate that studies constantly try to "figure out" something that is just natural...

Women who breathe during pregnancy may eventually go into labor.

It is a common theme for TV news reports to toss out a blurb of unconfirmed information about any and everything.
