Camping - Safe sleep area for baby?

I know this is a bit far off, but I am a planner. We camp a lot in the summer and fall, at least one trip a month, maybe two. We have one scheduled for this summer at the end of July, when baby will be about a month old. We camp in a travel trailer, it has four bunks on one end (for our four existing children) then bathroom, kitchen/family area with table on one side and couch on the other, then our Queen bed.

The problem is that there is no place for the baby. In our old pop-up we put the pack n play on the table when the table was down in the bed position (but a solid surface). That is not an option in this camper. The PnP also will not fit in the back with the kids, plus I don't want the baby's every move and noise to wake them up, at least this summer.

The only thing I can think of is putting a bassinet mattress in the bath tub. We never use the tub, we always shower in the campground facilities. Is this totally crazy? For those of you that camp in a camper, you know that every bit of space is allocated for something. This is the only space we don't use. There would not be a chance of the baby turning the water on, at least this summer. Obviously we will be looking at different campers for next year.

Thoughts - ideas? No co-sleeping either, not only is there no room in our bed, I just don't feel comfortable about it. I like my idea, but something is nagging at me and I wonder if my pregnant brain is forgetting something...TIA for your advice!

I would not let my baby sleep in the bathtub on a mattress that may or may not fit properly.

You could get a rock n play or a bouncy seat or one of those "travel beds" that's just a pad with sides.  Stroller?  Carseat?

My concern with the bathtub would be if the mattress isn't completely tight against the sides of the tub it can become a suffocation hazard. (If the baby were to roll into the gap with his/her face up against the mattress.) We're tent campers, so I've never actually seen a bathtub in a camper.

I know you said no co sleeping and I don't know what about it that makes you uncomfortable, but what about something like this? (Sorry no clicky, on a Mac)

http://www.amazon.com/First-Years-Close-Secure-Sleeper/dp/B00012CHFI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1361374820&sr=8-2&keywords=co+sleeping+nest

It'd keep LO safe in a bed and stop anyone from rolling. (If that's your concern.)

I would absolutely not have my month old newborn sleep in a bathtub. Yes, it is a totally crazy idea. If you can't fit a RnP or something like that in there, I don't know that the newborn could go, honestly.

Belhurst, that thing looks amazing! I may look into getting it for myself.

I was about to suggest co-sleeping in a Moses-basket, until I saw the 'no co-sleeping' rule.

Perhaps a Rock N Play then. I did not have one of those for the others, and had not thought of it.

On the other idea, bath tubs in campers are very small. I would measure to make sure that the mattress (really just a piece of foam with protective covering) would fit.

Thanks for your advice though, I appreciate it!

Can you stick Your husband on the couch, get 2 pool noodles under the fitted sheet to separate the queen (so one in the middle of the bed, and one on the outside) for you and baby?

Or maybe something like this, if your babe isn't rolling at all yet

Oh, the no co-sleeping is because there is barely enough room for my husband and I in the bed, let alone a baby, alone or in a basket.

Could you put that cosleeper nest thing on the couch? It looks like it can secure under the cushion.

If you can fit a Rock n Play, you could fit a car seat or a moses basket on the floor.  I'd still pick those over the bathtub.

Carseats aren't  meant for sleeping, I wouldn't do that. Young babes can asphyxiate.

Any of the items listed by PP's should be able to fit in the tub safely. I will wait until May when we get it out of storage to measure and make my decision. I like most of the suggestions though, so we'll see!

A basinette on one of the bunk beds? You could also use a laundry basket with pillows and blankets if you don't have one. Depending on how old your baby is and whether or not he/she can roll over you could also roll up blankets and put the LO on the bunk bed.

My brother was born July 20th and we used to live in our trailer for the summer. My mom went to the hospital from our trailer and came right back with my brother. He slept in a bassinet in the tub! It was the only place for him. I definitely wouldn't just put the mattress in there, but if there is anything else that would provide a more secure sleeping area I would definitely do something like that.

I personally wouldn't let my kid sleep in a rock n play either, there's the same issue with the blocked airway.

I think everyone is being WAY overprotective here with the carseat or rock and play option.

I would be using a carseat or bouncer chair.  When my daughter was sick and could sleep just laying down, we had her sleep in her bouncy chair...that young...she isn't going anywhere...and seriously, I'm a worry wart and am super protective.  What are they going to suffocate on?  I mean...you need to strap your child in properly.  If your child is due this summer and you are camping this summer, your baby is not going to be able to roll around in the bouncy chair.  And put the baby in the seat on the floor next to you.  Obviously, don't put it on an elevated surface.

Just to let you know...I have no idea if there is any fancy research on this or not...but when I worked for children services, a car seat was an acceptable place to put an infant in to sleep.

A car seat is a risk because of how LO reclines in it. Their airway can become restricted, causing breathing issues.

To OP, I am in the exact situation as you, my EDD is June 2nd and we may be doing a camping trip in July so baby will be about 4-6 weeks old depending when we go. We also have a popup trailer, I plan on bringing my RnP and my PnP (which has the bassinet fixture that sits on top) From what I here the RnP are smaller and perhaps you can put this next to you and hubby when sleeping, then fold up when not in use??

Thanks for your advice. We don't have a pop-up anymore, but a travel trailer. It's bigger, but all the space is allotted to specific uses. I am going to see if I can do an RnP on the floor, or one of those co-sleeper things that was suggested on the couch when it is folded out into a bed. We'll see. Good luck to you!

Don't do the mattress and tub.  Recently there was a recall on a product designed for babies to sleep in because a couple babies got their faces to close to the non-breathable base (tub sides are not breathable) or under the mattress because it was placed in the sleeper rather than under (as you would be placing the mattress in the tub).  What about a bassinet?  Ours was much more compact than our PNP.  GL!

I'm an assistant director at a childcare center and infants are not allowed to sleep in car seats or bouncy chairs. It is a huge risk. I have  a ton of articles (of course in my office) but I am sure there is stuff on the internet if you look. I had to read through terrible case studies about what has happened.
