Baby measuring BIG. STMs, any thoughts?

Hey all,

i had an ultrasound yesterday to check on my low lying placenta and the tech told me that the baby is already 4 lbs 13 oz!!!  i'm only 30 weeks (and don't look any bigger than the average 30 week pregnant lady).  The doctor commented that the baby is in the 95th percentile for size and mentioned c section...and i burst into tears.  Getting pregnant was an ordeal and i so badly want to have a natural birth if i can (though i'm grateful just to be having a baby).

i know ultrasound measurements in the third tri can often be really inaccurate so i'm trying not to get too panicked, but still.

Anyone have any experience with measurements being out to lunch?

Exactly what you said: third tri u/s measurements are just not that precise. And really, it's about the size of the head not the weight of the baby. And more than that, it's about a well positioned baby more than the baby size.

If you feel like you're already getting c-section pressure, I'd think about switching care providers. 30 weeks is not too late to find someone that makes you feel safe and supported instead of fearful and trapped.

Like you said they can be pretty inaccurate.  Plus your doctor just mentioning a c-section doesn't mean you are going to have one.  He was probably just saying it like hey it's something to think about which really I think everyone should think about the possibility that they might have to have a c-section.

Stuff can and does happen that makes it a necessity but your baby measuring large at 30 weeks doesn't mean you will have to have a c-section.

Can't tell you how many times I've heard  my friend's say that their Dr's told them they're going to have a monster child....only to deliver a 6-7lb baby.  Seriously, just calm down and don't worry.  They really have no clue.

I didn't have a growth u/s with my 1st, and I delivered a 9lb baby.  Don't let your Dr freak you out about delivering a big baby.  It can be done.  I promise!!

I measured ahead with #1 and am measuring ahead with #2. I had a growth u/s yesterday and the baby is in about the 80th percentile according to it (though, like you said, who knows if there is any accuracy). My OB didn't mention a CS (quite the opposite and said there's no reason to believe i'd have one). I delivered my first vaginally (and pretty easily/quickly) and he was 8 lbs. 1 oz. Try not to worry. I wouldn't consent to a CS for estimated growth alone.

Like PP said growth estimates can be off by up to 2 lbs. They told me my DS was going to be 9lbs - 9lbs 3oz and he was 7lbs 12oz. Even if your LO is big... women deliver big babies vaginally everyday, our bodies were made for it. Try not to worry!

Thank you!!

i think the way baby was positioned (head down, but hands and feet in his/her face - all scrunched up in a ball) may have something to do with it being off.  The tech commented that s/he had a big belly, but if you're all scrunched up, then how accurate is that measurement?

The doctor i saw was a resident as my OB was away.  To be fair, she wasn't pushing a c section, but just saying it was something to keep in mind.  She may have also been bringing it up because of my placenta.  My OB is not concerned with it (other than putting me on pelvic rest - poor DH) and has already told me he'd let me labour with it being the way it is (2cm away from cervix, currently)   She also said that the measurements are often wrong, and that babies can measure in the 95th percentile one ultrasound, and then 4 weeks later be in the "normal" range.  Baby hasn't measured way ahead in any of my other ultrasounds.

My sister (who is a twig...a tall twig) had a 9lb 7oz baby naturally.  i'm hoping LO doesn't top that!

My OB doesn't provide size estimates because she says it's too hard to be accurate.

You're right, the u/s measurements in the third tri can be really inaccurate. At my appt before I went into labor with DS (40w 1d), I was told he weighed about 7lbs. He came out weighing 9lbs 14oz at 40w 3d. I delivered him vaginally just fine.

I'm measuring large as well. At 20 weeks, LO was 5 days ahead. At 29 weeks he was 3 weeks ahead (head and belly were about 90%). The doctor's just keeping an eye on it, but we're still planning to go forward with a VBAC. It's been 6 weeks since my last ultrasound. Doctor just felt my stomach (which is considered by some to be more accurate than the ultrasound) and said LO is on the bigger side but nothing too concerning. It's possible LO just got measure after a growth spurt. :-) I'll be going in for a follow-up ultrasound in the next week, just so my doctor has the numbers on file. We may discuss a cesarean, but size alone will not be a deciding factor for me.

My 2nd measured almost 3 weeks ahead at 33 weeks (she was estimated at 5lbs 10z at 33.5 weeks). In the end, she came out at 36.5 lbs at only 6lbs 1oz. She was pretty much average size. So, while I'm sure there's some accuracy to the estimates, they have a margin of error. You should be able to ask or even find it printed on the ultrasound pictures. At 29 weeks, the margin of error for the weight estimate from my recent ultrasound was 9oz (it had the estimated weight then +/- 9oz beside it

With my first I measured 4 weeks early from about 16 weeks on...they kept saying he was going to be huge, well over 10lbs. Well...when he came a week late he was just over 7lbs. With this pregnancy I am measuring right on track but I feel freaking huge, like this boy is going to be bigger than the first. I dont hold a lot of stock in the measurements, etc they do and think its all just a guestimate.

DD was in the 90th percentile and I was able to deliver her vaginally, after having to be induced, it can be done.

Those measurements can be very far off. I would not consent to a c-section based solely on an estimate of baby's size. Even ACOG (American College of OBs and GYNs) does NOT recommend c-section based on size alone unless the baby is estimated to be over 11 pounds. Even in that case, they only recommend it be offered as an option.

It's very uncommon for your body to grow a baby that is too big for you to deliver vaginally, despite what so many people seem to think these days.

I was told via ultrasound and by a dr feeling the baby through my stomach that my baby would be more than 10 pounds.  He weighed 7lbs 4 oz.

With my last pregnancy, my one OB told me that a mother's intuition as to a baby being bigger or smaller than the previous was more accurate than u/s or any manipulation by the dr.  In my circumstance, she was right on.  DD#1 was 8lb6oz at 37w1d,  her sister was 7lb12oz at 40w3d.  I knew all along that DD#2 was smaller.  I'm not ready to make a guess on this one quite yet.

Don't worry about size until the big day. If it isn't caused by gestational diabetes you hopefully shouldn't have to make any decisions untli you're in labor. With a big baby it is important to consider going as natural as possible so you can move around and allow your baby to move down as needed to assist you in getting the baby out. Once you're on your back your hips are not at its largest and you have to push the baby under and then out, making it harder to get a big baby out without tearing or being cut.
