Dentist questions...

I am 21 weeks along and am going tom y dentist today to get a loose filling taken out. Its super annoying, like a popcorn kernel lodged inbetween my teeth! Not painful just annnoying and I know it can collect bacteria.

Anyway my concerns are thus:

Are the head x-rays a no-no? I can't see why they would need one, I can move the filling around with my finger, its pretty straight forward what the problem is. and what if they have to numb my teeth? Is that stuff safe? Any insight would be awesome, thanks!

I know when I was pregnant with my first and went to the dentist for my regular cleaning, they wouldn't do an x-ray.  As for the local anesthetic, that is fine, as you aren't being put to sleep.  I had a growth removed on my leg and had to have a local anesthetic to numb the area.  My OB said it was perfectly fine.  If you are concerned, call your dentist and ask if they have to do an x-ray.

My dentist wouldn't do Xrays on me. Better safe than sorry is what he said. I had a filling done and they didn't need to do an Xray anyways, so I doubt they would need to on you either. The stuff they give you to numb you is safe, I had it and it never caused any problems for me. Don't worry! :)

My dentist didn't do x-rays on me, however I did have to have a root canal a few weeks ago.  My OB was fine with that...she said the x-rays were okay (as long as I was double draped) and that the local anesthesia was fine also.  Good luck!

X-rays are ok (per my OB) with double draping - as for getting numbed up, they recommend against novicaine (spelling?) because it contains epinephrine.  A possible numing agent that does NOT include epinephrine is lidocaine.

I was given a local shot of that when I had a mole removal at 7weeks, and will be finishing a root canal (started pre-pregnancy) today and will use lidocaine (if numbing is needed) - I'll also be getting just one xray for the whole project, and my dentist prefers to do no more xrays during the pregnancy...

I had dental work during my 1st trimester. They took xrays and made me wear 3 of those lead aprons, they also only gave me novacaine with an approval letter from my OB. I'd get it taken care of, just see what their policies are about work during pregnancy

Get your OB to fax them permission to work on you. Have it ready because they will ask for the OK from your doctor.

Tell the Xray tech that you are pregnant. They will put extra shields on your abdomen for the XRAYs.

If they are aware of your pregnancy then the dentist will choose safe pain injections.

I had some fillings done last pregnancy. It was fine and DD is healthy.

I work at a dentist and we treat pregnant woman often. Xrays can be taken they will just double shield you and do minimal. Also it is safe to numb you if they use a certain type of anesthetic without epi.

DH is a dentist.  Although most patients are most familiar with novocaine, most dentists actually use lidocaine as their numbing agent. It's kind of a cultural branding thing, like how people call all tissues "Kleenex" or bandages "Band-Aids".  Best to double check if you or your OB is concerned though.

I was going to say the same thing. I think most dentist use lidocane. Not novacaine.
