Registry Price points?

Hello everyone,

FTM here and I have a quick question.... what price range is appropriate when registering for gifts? Our friends are throwing us a baby shower and asked if I have a registry. I do, but Im nervous about when they see it because some of them may see it as pricey? Most of my items are $50 or more. The reason for that is that I registered for things I really need, not things I just want. I didnt register for any clothes because my family and my husbands family are already going nuts buying clothes. I also didnt register for diapers or small items like a bath tub because I can handle those myself.

So far I have registered for things like a high chair, carrier, monitor etc.

I'm just not sure if I will seem rude by picking pricier stuff vs. little things?
and yes I realize that for some people 50 or even 100 is not that pricey but I still want to be courteous of everyone attending the shower.

Include the smaller things (tub, towels, diapers, pacis, etc) so that everyone can find something(s) in their comfort zone.

I know you said you didn't register for smaller items because you can handle those on your own, but if people gift you a lot of small items, you could use the money you would have spent towards your bigger ticket items.

I would try to make sure you have at least 1-2 items under $30 per shower attendee.  Close friends and family may spend more, but for a regular shower, that's usually what I'm looking to spend.

Bath items, bibs, pacis, bottles and feeding supplies, toiletries, diapers, wipes, books, rattles, etc. are all things you'll get a lot of use out of and make it easier for people on a budget to put together a gift for you.

Leave the big ticket items on too, though, since some people do like to go in for a big group gift, and if not, you can use your completion coupon to buy for yourself.

I know what you mean, but they dont have to buy whats on your registry...for those that can afford, at least they know what you need most.

FTM here as well, I would say have a wide variety of prices...some people will only be looking to spend $20-$25 while others may spend more or even go in together on a larger item.

I did the same thing as you, only registered for the larger items because I wasn't expecting to have a shower and I wanted to use the completion coupon on them, so when MIL insisted on throwing us a shower, I had to go back and add lots of things.

Maybe some ideas - books, soap, lotion, shopping cart cover, tub, health items (thermometer, nail clippers, etc), bottles, sun shade, towels, wash cloths, sheets, changing pad and cover...just look up lists of registry items online and add what applies to you.

And people won't buy exclusively off your registry either, we received lots of extra things that we hadn't registered for. We didn't register for clothes and it seemed Ike everyone brought an outfit...or 10 :) thankfully they covered the whole first year, and weren't all newborn.

Include everything on your registry that you NEED for your LO.  That will include the lesser priced items that I am sure you can pick up on your own, but that's not really the point.  If nobody gets those things, you can use the completion discount to purchase those things on your own.

The registry is a suggestion to people.  They can choose to buy things from it or choose not to as well.

You might want to add those things you feel you can "handle" yourself because i will tell you that if you don't put some less expensive items on your registry people will not buy from it and you will not only be buying those "little, less expensive items" you will also be buying all the bigger items as well.  It has been my experience that most people don't spend over $50 unless it is like your sister, mother, MIL or possibly people going in together on a gift.

Oh ya...$50-100 IS pricey...especially if the guest is not one of your sisters or your mother or MIL.

I agree with everyone else- vary it. $50 may be a lot for one person to spend.

I would put the tub, tub toys, bath products, and other stuff on your registry. I didn't register for clothes either and that was fine.

FTM here as well, I understand what you're saying, but I agree with PP's you should include the smaller items. Speaking for my family, they tend to stick to registries and you can never have enough diapers! (Or so I'm told)

I have included all my big ticket items as well, you never know who may want to buy you something big, and I'm looking forward to the completion coupon! :)

Ditto all of this. I tend to stick to around 30 for shower gifts. If I only saw stuff over 50, I'd be annoyed.

Like pps said: I'd register for all the things I'd need for LO. A registry is a suggestion, not all your guests will shop off of it or decide to pool their money to buy you a big(ger) ticket item. From your point this could leave you with double/triple items you didn't register for (and might have trouble exchanging). As well as having to buy the smaller items and the big ticket items. From your guest's point: $50 is a lot of money. If I got invited to friend's shower (who isn't one of my besties) and see nothing under $50 on her registry I'd go off registry and buy her something else instead (probably clothes).

We have a huge range of things on our registry from a couple dollars (infant toothbrush) to over $200 (travel system).  The majority of things were in the $10-30 range.  My shower is Saturday and most things have NOT been purchased fom off of my registry.  In fact, only a handful of things have been purchased.  It will be interesting to see what we get on Saturday and what was not taken off the registry (for example, the travel system was purchased by DH's brother, but I had to go in and take it off, thank you BRU) and I'm sure lots of things were purchased that we didn't put on (at Buy Buy Baby they add on if the registry was scanned and there are a bunch of things added).

Definitely put on a range, but don't expect people to stick to it.  And like PPs said, $50-100 is way too much.  Include washcloths, toys, blankets, towels, toiletries, medicines, etc.

If you don't put any cheap stuff on your registry you become even more likely to be overloaded with clothes. Put small stuff that you need on your registry and use any money you saved by not having to buy burp cloths or whatever to buy the bigger stuff.

You really need a very wide variety of prices... my registry ranged around $2-$3 items, up to a $300 video monitor.   That way if someone wants to get you a basket of a bunch of little things, it's still stuff you want.  Or if a group of people want to go in on a larger gift, they know what you want as well.

like pp's have said... it'll save you money from the smaller things, to go towards a bigger item that wasn't purchased.

Thank you so much everyone. I have never done a registry before so I didnt really know what is good to do for it. I will make sure to add a variety of items at different price points.

I had a really wide price range of items I wanted, and I received baskets of all the little things I needed which add up at the end. and I didn't need to buy them myself.
